Siitä voi olla montaa mieltä, ovatko nämä tarinat hupaisia tai kuvat lystikkäitä... :D Saatikka siitä, ovatko nämä tarinat sitä sopivinta luettavaa 3 - 6 -vuotiaille lapsosille. Mutta olihan tämä nyt kerrassaan mahtavan upeaa riimittelyä kaikkine riipaisevine kuvineen!

Creo que a todos nos encantan los cuentos infantiles, y viviendo en Alemania éste fue uno de los regalos más bonitos que me han hecho.
∂єя ѕтяυωωєℓρєтєя es uno de los libros de cuentos alemanes más exitosos. Están narrados en verso. Consta de 10 historias en la que el protagonista es un niño o niña con algún vicio o "mal comportamiento", el cual al final, recibe un castigo. Siempre hay una moraleja.
Lo que me encanta de este libro es lo salvaje que es, los niños son amputados, quemados vivos y enterrados. Nada común en los libros de cuentos, así que a mí esto me encantó desde el principio.
En Frankfurt hay un museo del ∂єя ѕтяυωωєℓρєтєя, así que no tardaré en visitarlo, ya que el autor nació en ésta ciudad.

That's something you don't see very often these days in a children's book. Struwwelpeter has a bit of a reputation of being macabre, but there are actually only three stories where misbehaving children end up dead or mutilated. Doesn't sound very fun, you say? Well, the rhymes make the stories appear more light-hearted, and compared with some of the modern children's books that underestimate children horrifically, I'd rather recommend Hoffmann's wacky story anyday. No matter how hard you scream and misbehave, you're not entitled to break the rules or do what you want. Actions have consequences (the gravity of them you'll never know beforehand), and there's no better way of showing it than through a bit of unpleasantness in a children's book that's read in a safe environment.
The illustrations are part of the fun. I don't usually go for this kind of style, but the bright colours are beautiful and occasional hilarity comes from the expressions of the people and the animals. Crying cats, racist kids dipped in ink, a tailor dashing to cut some thumbs off, and - my favourite - a rabbit turning against a hunter.
This might also get me to brush up my German. I read the story aloud both in English and in German, and the original definitely sounded better. It has a nice rhythm and clang to it, but it also sounds more fun and playful.

When reading a book about children's authors, several mentioned that they had loved Struwwelpeter as a kid. However, they also cautioned against its dated and sometimes abusive subject matter. So, I had to read it myself (in English, not the original German), and found it to be entertaining and at times, ghastly. One kid won't stop sucking his thumb until he meets a horrifying Edward Scissorhands-type character and well...his thumb sucking days are over. Struwwelpeter is reminiscent of our own nursery rhymes with the exception that these are cautionary tales about naughty or thoughtless children and the evils that befall them. Like a collection of mini horror stories, I found myself eagerly awaiting the punishment to befall each child. Sick and twisted, yet told in rhyme, I can see why kids would have loved this one! But would I recommend this for kids? No!This is a work of evil genius.
