Nirrim's chapters were really boring and repetitive, specially compared to Sid's but I really like this story and the ending made me really emotional.

Now I haven't read the Winner's trilogy, but I have read both this and The Midnight Lie and I have greatly enjoyed them both. While I enjoyed The Midnight Lie for how grounded the story was, I enjoyed this The Hollow Heart for both expanding on the magic and gods hinted at in the first book while also answering the questions that remained unanswered. There may be spoilers in this review.
I think at its heart this is a story about two girls who are trying to figure out what they want in life. Sid is coming to realize that what she doesn't want is to marry a prince to give her country an advantage and instead what she wants is to have an adventure and be with Nirram, while Nirram wants to be with her and get rid of tyranny even if she is often misguided in her actions and lacks the compassion at the time to not become a tyrant herself.
What I especially liked about this novel was how it felt kind of like a fairy tale. It made me cry a bit at the end. A also liked how the gods really did feel like beings that no mortal can completely comprehend and how the perspective of the god acted as foreshadowing and gave the reveal later more weight. This was a good book.

Incredible series, only knocked a star off this one for some pacing problems and what seemed like some loss of momentum crashing into the end. I think separating the two books at a different plot point could remedy this. Well worth the read anyway.
This was a fantastic set of 2 books that had me reading at a clip I usually reserve for much simpler books. So many themes and messages here that I am still turning over in my head. I borrowed both of these from the library and have asked for hard copies as future gifts. I will need to return to this story for sure.

Midnight Lie was one of my favorite sapphic novels. The lore behind the kits captured me and of course Sid and Nirrim's dynamic put the book on top-tier for me. But this sequel, I'm so disappointed, it was frustrating. 70% of the book and they still haven't meet again? Having individual plots were understandable but Sid's investigation and dark Nirrim's introspection were taking waaaaay too long. It didn't feel like the first book I fell in love with :(
