Interesting mail-order bride story. Really appreciated the mature way the couple worked with each other. So many of these types of stories have petty misunderstandings and miscommunications, and stress and anger or blaming their past for everything. This couple took responsibility for all their decisions, talked through stressful situations, and were up front when asked a question. I really appreciated that dynamic. Content warning: The second half of the book definitely deals with a lot of serious topics that are hinted at earlier, but I didn't expect to go into quite so much detail based on the lighter nature of the earlier part of the book.

  • I love the heroine
  • It was odd to me how little bearing Morgan's
    past sexual abuse
    had on the story
  • I was disappointed by the ending. Not the events, but the way it was written. The effect was lackluster

I stumbled upon this book while looking for ‘marriage of convenience’ recommendations.
It was pretty good and a quick read!

There were some lines and moments that I adored but overall I would find myself sucked into the story and then thrown back out. If that makes sense. It definitely had its moments but it couldn’t hold me the whole time, you know when you get lost in a story and forget you’re reading and then suddenly something happens in the book and you’re brought back to reality and the words turn back into just words on a page?  There’s got to be a name for that, but anyway that happened a lot for me which is the reason I’m not rating higher.

Terrible plot, trauma porn thrown around as an attempt at character development, awful ending.

I've often heard it said that unless a romance novel's protagonists meet within the first five pages, no agent or editor will be at all interested in reading further. In our age of immediate gratification, a slow-build romance, one in which we get to know our protagonists as characters a bit before they fall insta-love (or at least insta-lust) with each other seems almost as difficult to find as a blue limestone columbine at an elevation lower than its native alpine Rocky Mountain meadows.

Petition to rename this book In Want of A Trigger Warning.

All I can say is what the fuck was this author thinking with this? I’ve read a lot of historical westerns, and they tend to either be quite dark and gritty or very light and fluffy. This one tried to be both and I am traumatized by it.
I don’t know how to review this gd book. It was a slice of life historical western with funny side characters mixed with horrifyingly detailed accounts of childhood sexual assault and forced abortion-like medical procedures, ending with a magnificent seven style bank robbery and miracle pregnancy which made the whole abortion horror-story completely unnecessary.

It was very jarring to switch back and forth from sweet marriage of convenience to flashbacks in graphic detail. Honestly, this book needs content warnings.

If I could put those shock-value-horror-for-horror-sake moments out of my head this would be a three star read. It was an ok story with weirdly written dialogue but relaxing over all. But because of the stupid, unnecessarily sensual descriptions of the hero being sexually assaulted at 11 yrs old, I can’t rate this higher than one star.

So be warned of what’s in this book my friends, don’t let the relaxed, funny, slice of life stuff lull you into a state of boredom, because the horrors are just around the corner.

Solid 4 stars (I know, I'm just as surprised as you)

Something I absolutely never would've picked up without Amanda's recommendation, but she's never steered me wrong and that still holds true.
