Tallstar's revenge follows the journey of Talltail working through his grief and anger regarding losing the love of his mother and the cats he loved who had died. Also, he is not (but is) gay lover Jake
who he gallivants with on his journey to avenge his father's death. Two things that the Hunter's are really good at writing are 1# a violent death that takes you a moment to process and remember that you are reading a book for young readers (and also some graphic descriptions of being poisoned) 2# emotions, especially when a cat is furious. You get to see this writing a lot throughout the Power of Three series and it's good to see it here too. I liked Tallstar's Revenge when I read it the first time years ago and I still like it now. I, however, think it was missing something just a little extra (what I have no idea) it just needed a bit more in it and I think if they were brave enough and made Jake and Talltail explicitly in love with each other, I think that would have been it. Their friendship is good but they leave it open like there is something more and sadly you never get to see it.

I love Tallstar, his quest to seek vengeance is really believable, and despite him being in the wrong you can't help but be sympathetic. Also, TallJake is real.

I only heard good things about Tallstar’s Revenge and I was not disappointed; it became one of my favorite Warriors books of all time.

This is one of those Super Editions that tells a completely new story that was never mentioned in the books before. Surprisingly, I was still invested in every moment of the plot. Like its name suggests, this book focuses on the life of Tallstar, especially his time as a warrior. Tallstar early has to endure a great loss which changes his whole life and the life of his Clan.

The four Super Editions taking place before The Prophecies Begins (Bluestar's Prophecy, Crookedstar's Promise, Yellowfang's Secret, Tallstar’s Revenge) build the more or less perfect Super Edition quartet. The books are actually actively connected to each other and when you’ve read the all the books, you literally know every cat from the allegiances personally which is so great.

It was interesting to see how different WindClan was back then from how it is today and how they differed from other Clans. I loved the contrast of tunnel cats and warrior cats and the culture around them; their conflict was depicted really well. It was so sad that they decided to
stop using the tunnels after Sandgorse died; I had the feeling that some of the culture of WindClan also died with this, since it’s one of the oldest Clan traditions as it can be seen in the Dawn of the Clans arc

Another great thing about this novel is Tallstar as the main character with his amazing character arc. Some parts of his arc were rather predictable, like
that Sandgorse would die after he argues with Tallstar or that Tallstar wouldn’t kill Sparrow
, but I didn’t mind it here because the focus is not on a surprising story, but more on Tallstar’s emotions. At the beginning of this novel, Tallstar struggles because he doesn’t want to follow into his parent’s footsteps as a tunnel cat, but he feels that he has the obligation to do so. After
Sandgorse’s death
, he changes and is often lost in his thoughts, which made him more interesting than many other Clan cats. His feeling of not belonging to his Clan whatsoever was portrayed so well and is understandable since no one is nice to him or shows understanding for his feelings. While traveling to avenge his father, he grew so much and realized that he’s important to the Clan as well. His feeling of missing WindClan was also depicted really well, and when he came home, I was basically aww-ing the whole time because all the other cats also realized how important Tallstar is for the Clan. This book ends perfectly with a wrap-up chapter with Talltail’s leader ceremony (which I always love to read about) and the last sentence gives an outlook to The Prophecies Begin

My favorite part of this novel was the later part, and this was mainly because of one cat: Jake. I already knew about Jake from memes and fanart, so I was so hyped when we met him. Jake is just so cute and complements Tallstar’s character well with his curious and a bit naïve character. Obviously, I shipped the both of them instantly. Compared to other canon ships of the series, they have so much atmosphere going on. If two cats of the opposite gender would be so close to each other like Jake and Tallstar, they would’ve been called mates. Sadly, Warriors is very heteronormative and I doubt that we’ll ever will get a canon non-heterosexual cat.

I think Tallstar’s Revenge is my favorite Super Edition: Tallstar is such an amazing character, and his struggles and emotions were depicted so well; same goes for the struggles of WindClan. Even the travel part of this novel was great because of Jake.
