I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

It took me almost 2 weeks, but I did finish it. It was an amazing and fun book, but for some reason I just couldn’t read more than 40 pages a day, if I could read at all. I don’t know why, but this happens with books at times. I love most to everything, but yet something is stopping me from reading.

I am going to write a review, or try. Sorry if it is a bit chaotic though.

This book is about Jack Valentine (AWESOME name) who along with her team of Seekers has a murder to solve. Yep, someone was murdered in a gruesome way and it is up to Jack and her colleagues to find out what happened to the guy and if it is connected with murders that happened in London earlier. However as the story progresses the web expands and it becomes quite a tricky thing that may rumble the Silver foundations. I really loved reading how it went from just a murder mystery to something much more. Corruption, who is on the good side, and who isn’t? It really became very much exciting. I am also glad that Jack eventually gave up on Drake on that he had something to do with it, because DANG that sure got annoying after a few times. I get her feelings towards the guy, but this is just not professional or OK.

I also liked reading about Jack’s colleagues and we do find out plenty about them which had me very happy. Some books don’t care that much about their side characters, but this one sure does. I liked reading about Naia, Boyd, Cam, Ed. Especially Naia and Cam, those were my favourite side characters. I just love the relationship/friendship that Cam and Jack had, it was so sweet.

We do find out a ton about our murder victim, and I am not sure if I wanted to know all the details. I don’t want to spoil too much, but oh no, this guy.. Nuhuh. With each part we found out new things and with each new thing I just wasn’t sure I wanted to know more. The whodunnit was well done and I wasn’t surprised it was THAT person.

I loved reading about Silver and who and what they are. Not your standard vampires and that had me delighted. While I do love standard vampires, I always like it when people take a different spin on it. Plus, I had a big laugh at Jack’s drink concoctions.

May Day is the latest addition to Josie Jaffrey's expansive universe, and the first book of her Seeker series, set in Oxford. It's a brilliant start to a compelling plot line, and I was on the edge of my seat for the entire second half of the book. Josie Jaffrey ties together determined characters, an atmospheric setting, and a complex plot together in a book that will keep you hooked.

Jack Valentine, our main character, was very much a classic slightly grumpy, has-an-authority-issue detective, but with a vampire twist. I really liked how determined she was, and how strong her personality was, without setting off my 'oh no she's going to get herself into massive trouble' radar constantly. Said radar did get set off a couple of times though, but that's just how Jack is! She's a very complex character, and very adaptable to the situations she gets herself in to. I was particularly fond of Cam, who is Jack's best friend, and I'm very much hoping to see more of him as well as the other supporting characters in upcoming novels.

I was not a massive fan of the relationships, partly because I'm not a massive fan of love triangles, but also because I didn't much like the way that Jack approached both options. On the one hand, there's the cute Scottish doctor, and on the other there's the man Jack has spent her entire time as a vampire disliking. I personally was rooting for Dr Ross, because she and Jack seemed like a good fit, and there aren't enough f/f relationships in vampire books. However, a lot of the vampire attraction was very animalistic in a way, with marking and pheromones, and that's just not my cup of tea, which is what made this book less than five stars for me. If it is your thing, then I think you'll really like the relationship execution, because it's not bad, it's just not for me.

The plot is also solid and compelling, and kept me very much hooked when it started picking up. It was very much a build-up of suspense, starting fairly low key with a normal, albeit slightly odd, case for the Seekers, but it progresses and the way that information is revealed balances suspense and foreshadowing very well. There's also a lot of hinting at potential upcoming plotlines, especially with the Solis Invicti, and some interesting hints about Winta, the Silver who turned Jack, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing where the rest of the series goes.

Now, one of the things I loved most about this book was the setting. Not because I particularly enjoy books set in Oxford, but because I actually live just down the road from Oxford, and I could picture the setting so vividly. Josie Jaffrey did an excellent job of evoking Oxford and the atmosphere it has, and for me this made the story that much more 3-Dimensional. I particularly liked the jab at boys from Magdalen College School, because I know several of them and the jab was well deserved. Also, the town I live in was mentioned, something which has never happened!

I highly recommend checking out this book if you enjoy vampires, corrupt secret systems, a good mystery, or all of the above. You don't have to have read the Solis Invicti, set in the same universe, before as it comes after chronologically, but if you want more of the worldbuilding, it's a good next step. Overall, May Day was a very enjoyable book, so if you're interested, go read!

Thank you to the author for providing me with a review copy in exchange for an honest review!

May Day is overall a pretty good book. The plot and the urban fantasy elements worked wonderfully together and the author left the reader with plenty of questions for Book #2. It gave the reader an interesting and complex mystery to solve while introducing a new world. At the same time, there were some plot contrivances and developments that I wasn’t a big fan of. I’d recommend this novel to anyone looking for a quick urban fantasy read with a little bit of mystery thrown in.

In May Day Jaffrey has created a whole world hidden in our society, a society of vampires that exists parallel to the human society, it even has a hierarchy, as it's called in the book, so well-structured and organized that it has no fissures, even those who live out of their laws have a name and are prosecuted by the Seekers, a sort of vampire-police.

As I was reading it, I kept thinking that I’d love to see this book as a TV series or a film, because the characters, the plot and the whole society is so well-created that would make it an intriguing and addictive series.

Jaffrey's writing is very descriptive and fast paced, which makes you fly through the pages while enjoying a good mystery with some romantic drama in the midst. It also has a lot of open plots, creating a spider web that’s not at all a mess, quite the contrary, it's really well thought and knotted, just as if it all was real and Jack was just narrating her life, writing it down as it happens.

"You can be whoever you want to be, Valentine. They're all you."

I appreciate the fact that May Day is a diverse book, including some characters of colour clearly described so there’s no doubts about their skin colour, and also LGBT+ representation, including the main character Jack, who’s bisexual, and her companion (sweet, wise) Cam, who’s homosexual, among others.

I’ve ended up giving it four stars over five because the last 100 pages (saving the last 30) were a bit slow, they kept repeating some parts of the story you already know by heart because they’ve mentioned them a thousand times before, but the mystery and the whole plot that develops from it is really well thought and can definitely lead to new books in this series, which I can’t wait to read.

"You can't control how other people feel, any more than you can control how you feel yourself."

To finish, there are a couple of things I can’t left unsaid. The first one is that unexpected plot twist close to the end of the book that solves the case and gives a new definition to all the events, but still keeps some lose ends, creating an intriguing cliffhanger, which hopefully will be solved in the next books. And the second and last one is that the final chapter was really exciting and made my heart race a bit, it was a little act of rebellion form the main character that I’m sure will lead to biggest consequences in the upcoming books, which I’m looking forward already!

Thanks to Victoria Eaton, Josie Jaffrey's publicist, for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

May Day By Josie Jeffrey Book Review

Summary

Jack Valentine didn’t ask to be a vampire, yet here she is working for the seekers or the twisted version of vampire law enforcement. Jack deals with the same things any other law enforcement officer deals with, a tangled love life, a heart-broken partner, kidnapping druggists, and murder.

While investing a May Day morning murder, Jack finds herself entangled in a strange love affair with a pathologist and a man who ruined her life twenty years ago. She attends the opera and strange parties. She also drinks a lot. What’s not to love?

Thoughts:

I firmly believe that vampires can be over done in the literary world, but this was glorious! I really enjoyed the look into the vampire “legal system” - it was a great change of pace from other vampire novels out there.

Character development was strong in this novel. Jack is a hot mess that you can’t help but love. She’s that co-worker you can’t stand (especially when you’re hungover) but you love being in her presence at the same time. I also loved the characters that you are supposed to hate, such as Killian Drake. I know I’m not supposed to like him, but I also find myself rooting for him.

I will definitely be keeping my out as the rest of this series is released.

Target Audience:

This can get a little gory if you have a middle schooler who wants to read this. I do not believe in discouraging children from reading certain books, but I do believe in encouraging them to wait before reading certain books if you don’t think they are ready (This encourages them to continue reading rather than turning them away from reading).

Conclusion:

I would pretty much encourage any who loves reading about vampire lore to read this book. Even if you didn’t like vampires, but you liked legal thrillers, I would encourage you to read this book. If you like characters who have glorious character flaws, read this!

Rating: 5 Stars

I received a copy of this novel directly from the author, and I am forever grateful for that.

Synopsis: If the murderer you’re tracking is a vampire, then you want a vampire detective. Just maybe not this one.

It’s not that Jack Valentine is bad at her job. The youngest member of Oxford’s Seekers has an impressive track record, but she also has an impressive grudge against the local baron, Killian Drake.
When a human turns up dead on May Morning, she’s determined to pin the murder on Drake. The problem is that none of the evidence points to him. Instead, it leads Jack into a web of conspiracy involving the most powerful people in the country, people to whom Jack has no access. But she knows someone who does.
To get to the truth, Jack will have to partner up with her worst enemy. As long as she can keep her cool, Drake will point her to the ringleaders, she’ll find the murderer and no one else will have to die.
Body bags on standby.

Review: Overall, I thought this was a well done novel. The book was interesting and it involved vampires! I thought the murder case was well written and the characters were well developed. I also thought the author did well with the world building.

However, I did think that the pacing was a bit weird in spots. It was very slow leading into some of the chapters.

Verdict: Really well done!

What I Loved
May Day is my third Josie Jaffrey book and I didn’t think it was possible to love her books anymore than I already do. Her books have turned me into such a vampire lover and this one is no exception. The characters are so unique and realistic as well as the blood-sucking world that is extremely fun to read about!

The Story
When a human is found dead early in the morning, Jack Valentine the wonderful, sassy Silver she is, is quick to assume that it’s the irritating yet handsome Baron, Killian Drake that is involved. That is until none of the evidence is pointing in his direction. Jack and the other Seekers must find out who this vampire killing humans is before anymore turn up dead. But as stubborn as she is, Jack does not want to ask for the Baron’s help. As we all know though, things don’t always work out the way we want.

As soon as I started this book, I was instantly hooked and knew I would love it. The plot was extremely entertaining and I was super invested in the investigation. I couldn’t help but try to figure it out as the story went along, but my detective skills are not up to par with Valentine’s. I always do love a good bit of steamy romance as well and all I can say is this book has it!

The Characters
You can’t go wrong with a fiery female lead and I have to say Jack Valentine quickly became one of my favourite characters. She is so determined, brave and has this incredible dark and sarcastic sense of humour that I simply love.

Another thing I love about Jaffrey’s books, is how the world’s overlap as well as the characters. There is never a dull character it’s also exciting when you see a character pop up who you may have met before!

Overall Thoughts
Overall, May Day is an exciting murder mystery full of paranormal twists and romance to die for. Its very easy to get hooked, so make sure your day is free to sit down and read this in one go! I can’t wait to read the next book in the Seeker series as well as more of her other books.

This book was everything that I expected and more! It was thrilling and good fun and Jack Valentine was just a brilliantly vibrant character.

Jack was badass and not afraid to hold back her thoughts, something that made the fact that the book is from her POV even better. She has her own brand of sarcastic, British humour and I ate it up. That added to the romantic subplots she had going on made me fall in love with her and now I am desperate to see where it all ends up for her because she is definitely going to get herself in a massive hole that she can't get out from at one point. The rest of the seekers were also brilliant and I loved the found family aspect of them, on top of the fact that they all had their own stories and histories made it all come to life even more. And of course, then there was Drake, freaking Drake and the chemistry that just oozed from his interactions with Jack, something that I hope continues in the sequel.

The plot itself, the mystery of the May Day murder and everything that unravelled from it was brilliantly written. It was well-paced and there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me engaged and desperate to read more to fund out what was going to happen next. And of course, there is the larger problem that was revealed and didn't really get solved and I hope that Jack gets to deal with it all as the series unfolds. And the conclusion of it all was well written and I definitely did not see it all coming because the reveal of the killer was executed perfectly because I did not see it coming!

And as I'm pretty sure that have guessed the writing was brilliant! It was witty and fast-paced and well crafted and I loved every second of it. Josie is very quickly becoming one of my all-time favourite authors because everything I read form her is simply wonderful and I can't wait to read more.
