⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Obsessed. There's nothing I would change because it was perfection (must read + reread)

"Do me a favour, stop writing about me"
"You first"s

Eva Mercy, a single mom and bestselling erotica writer from Brooklyn, finds herself overwhelmed. Shane Hall, a reclusive literary figure, unexpectedly appears in New York. Their reunion at a literary event reignites their past romance, captivating New York's Black literary scene. Unknown to others, they shared a passionate week twenty years ago and have been secretly exchanging messages in their books since. As they reconnect over seven steamy days in Brooklyn, Eva struggles with trust issues from Shane's past betrayal.

This book balances humor, warmth, and profound sensuality, exploring themes of motherlessness and the complexities of love. There really isn't much more to say other than this book is perfection. I have never read a book so beautiful and emotional. While there is so much sadness and tragedy in this book you are filled with humour and love while being healed all at the same time. This is honestly my perfect comfort read and books like this really highlight to me why 90% of the time I am not a dark romance reader.

Tropes: second chance, single mother,
Triggers: self harm, sexual assault of a minor, chronic pain (migraines), drug/alcohol abuse, attempted suicide, suicidal thoughts, neglect

Não me moveu.

I really liked this story and the way you're kind of thrown in the middle. Eva is a hard-working writer, working hard to be taken seriously, and when Shane shows up at the author panel and kind of takes over, because he's famous for never doing publicity events, you really identify with Eva's resentment, especially because she's "just" a romance writer. Then you get glimpses of what happened between Eva and Shane when they were teens.

The past events hinge on
the way Eva's mother neglects her, and the mother's boyfriends who harrass Eva. Shane is in foster care and turns to drugs and alcohol for relief. In the present storyline, Eva is an anxious mother, reluctant to introduce her daughter to Shane because of the lingering trauma with her mother's boyfriends. Shane pours himself into helping at-risk youths. Both have to come to terms with their trauma before they can try to build a successful relationship, and I liked the care the book took with these characters and their emotional recovery.
