2.5, rounded up to three stars. This duology has a lot of potential but I felt it didn’t live up to it. It’s an interesting plot line but the execution left something to be desired. I found some of the writing very repetitive and dense, especially describing literally everything with pastry imagery. One of the reasons I read the second book after being less than impressed with the first was the promise of this alternative culture of the Iron Ladies but I felt the author didn’t do that subculture justice and most of the book was focused on what seemed to be a long and pointless chase.

[b:The Belles|23197837|The Belles (The Belles #1)|Dhonielle Clayton|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1492784901s/23197837.jpg|42742745] was one of my favorite books of 2018, so I was really excited for its sequel. Unfortunately, I don't think The Everlasting Rose quite lived up to its predecessor. I actually felt like not very much happened (until the very end), so this didn't feel exceptionally exciting. I also had a bit of a hard time remembering who everyone was when there's, like, 25 Belles or something to keep track of. But I really like Dhonielle Clayton's writing, and I did like the ultimate ending and the epilogue.

I'm a little confused about the decision to include another book in the series. (At least I'm assuming that's what's going on since a third book is listed here on GR). I felt like this was a nice ending to the series, and seemed to be the intended ending. But this is a nice world, and it wouldn't be horrible to return to it once more.

Plenty of twists a turns. I just wish there was a set up for more books!

I really wanted to like this book. As with the first book, I think the world Clayton envisions is fascinating and unique. But the whole book felt rushed. We weren't given enough time with the characters. So when dramatic things happened, they lacked emotional weight. I didn't care.

Book felt rushed. Certain things were just not expanded upon. I was just unhappy with the pace and almost DNF but I wanted to support a POC

Another dark, intriguing book about beauty set in a world that seems idyllic but is rotten just beneath the surface. In book two that rottenness is in full view and I had a hard time putting is down! I love all the lush descriptions and it was nice getting to see more of the world. I’m interested in seeing where the author takes book 3!

2.5 stars. Boy was I disappointed in the end of this series. I'm still wondering what in the hell happened. I loved, loved the first book, everything from the pacing to the story to the world building to the characters. But Everlasting Rose was just, I hate to say, kinda sloppy. It felt so slow at times, but then super rushed all the rest (which, IMO, was the majority of it). I'd be staring at the pages going, whoa, how did we end up here?? Did I miss a chapter?

And though I'll admit, I was somewhat pleased to see a pull-back on the romance (no insta-fall-into-each-others-arms), it was also really confusing. I felt no buy-in to WANT Remy and Camille to be together. They were just...there. Bleh.

The end. Again, I felt I missed key pieces. Oh, it's over? Ok, I guess they'll just all live HEA!

But, Clayton's writing is still beautiful, and I did feel transported with her descriptions of her world. I just wish the pacing was more steady and ends were tied up better.

Looks like there might be a third one? I really hope so, I love this world a lot.

2024 update:

3, but third book apparently doesn't continue the story from the original. fourth book?

A decent sequel but as a possible finale it leaves something to be desired. I feel like the author purposely left the door open a crack so she can come back and write more if she desires (and/or the interest is there). However it's still closed enough that if she doesn't we'll survive.

It's an interesting one, I have a lot to digest still on this... more thoughts to come.
