I'm giving this fourth book in the series another 4.5 stars. I skipped the second and third books because, well, I stumbled upon this fourth one first in a used book sale, yeah-ah.

I especially enjoyed the sections where Calvin and Alvin were learning more about their own knacks. And while some other reviewers were not fans of the courtroom scenes, those were actually some of my favorite parts.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Orson Scott Card's writing and/or thinks they would be interested in alt-history folk magic.

Although the setting and characters are still distinctive and entertaining, for a book about a "journeyman" it sits still in one place for a very long time.

Very good book. Not as excellent as the first 3 books, but a very solid. I particularly enjoyed the “shout out” to J.R.R. Tolkien and the “Lord of the Rings” reference during Alvin’s poem. I’m interested to see how the Unmaker continues to try and undermine Alvin from making the Crystal City.

I've appreciated this series more as I've accepted these books are character driven over plot. Some very cheesy interactions, but I'm engaged in seeing Alvin's development and effects on the world around him.

My reading of this series was interrupted by the unexpected arrival of various library books I had requested. As it turns out, the writer also took quite a break before writing this book, so I felt I was well cared for in easing back into this series at book 4.

The series continues right along, with a little more self-awareness (the book even introduces a character who is a novelist, which occasionally resulted in my being taken out of the story to reflect on the parallels). However, I enjoyed this book and am picking up Book 5, not because of momentum, but because I want to know what happens with Alvin.

To be continued...

Lot of deep questions in the undertones of the book. I really enjoyed and as per usual am not disappointed by Orson Scott Card.
