Perfectly disects gender, religion, and war — honestly, is there anything Terry can't write about in an engaging, comical way?

Only issue was the pacing in the middle.
Once the rest of the troupe gets revealed, it becomes a bit of a hassle remembering who's who, which sort of slows the story down. But hey, that's just my two cents.

The ending was brilliant, of course (love a Vimes cameo anytime), and the epilogue acutally felt like it wrapped the whole story up.
I guessed that Jackstrum was a woman a mile away, but the last coversation with Polly was something else.

A funny and lighthearted book with a great “twist,” but ultimately not my kind of read. It felt rather meandering, overly long, and played out, starting about 200 pages in. And, after the first big “twist,” none of the other twists were surprising — it just felt like more of the same for 300 pages

I've always said Hogfather is my favourite Discworld book (and like. it is Very Good), but after rereading Monstrous Regiment I think I might have to change that

Monstrous Regiment is about a group of girls (to begin with, anyway) who disguise themselves as boys to go off and fight in a seemingly neverending war against- well- whichever neighbouring country has been deemed An Abomination Unto The God Nuggan most recently.

This is a really good book. It's a dig at patriotism and war. It's about organised religion gone sour. It makes some good points about sexism but doesn't always quite stick the landing

It also contains one of the most compelling transgender narratives I've read, which is an achievement for a book written by a cis man in 2003.
It asks "is there anything physical that makes someone a man, or is it all in the mind?" (and it even gives you an aswer - it's not the first one). It has a trans man meet his adult son for the first time, introducing himself as the son's long lost father. It has Polly "Ozzer" Perks, who can be read as trans, non-binary, or just a bit Gender Funky
Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect. But I very much enjoyed it.

Tonker and Lofty for example. It didn’t matter which of them was on guard duty, the other one would be there as well. And there they were, sitting side by side on a fallen tree, staring down the slope. They were holding hands. They always held hands, when they thought they were alone. But it seemed to Polly that they didn’t hold hands like people who were, well, friends. They held hands tightly, as someone who has slipped over a cliff would hold hands with a rescuer, fearing that to let go would be to fall away.
