I love me a gothic book. Add books and spooky elements? You're on to an absolute winner. 
Devon and Cai are a whirl-wind. I love their love-hate, mother-son relationship and their internal battles. It's such a cool concept and the world-building just lent itself into this absolutely incredibly dark, twisted atmosphere that just blew me away. 
Only deducting 0.25 off I feel like there will be another book in the future to carry on the story, but I don't know if I want it.

This book had me drawn in fast! A highly unique story about finding family and breaking out of a cult, which is what the Families really are. A woman finding her own worth when she's been told all her life her only worth is to have children. Yes, she does have children, but she's not just a mother. 
This book was also very sad, just the horrible things that were done to her, the lies told. 
And holy crap, Sunyi Dean knows how to write loathsome, vile characters!

Adventurous and refreshingly original. I loved the concept of book eaters/mind eaters and the tropes of fairy tales that were re-worked to challenge what fairytales teach us to be true. The protagonist of this story must learn to see beyond a certain way of living and to dream beyond the narrow walls of the life she has been given. An imaginative story that will leave you wondering what the characters are up to now.
