Solid historical fiction. I'm only a casual James Bond fan, but didn't find that to be any impediment to enjoying the novel. Paddy's story felt authentic and I appreciated the synopsis of the real history in the epilogue.

Disclosure: I won this ARC as part of a Goodreads Giveaway.

One Woman’s War by Christine Wells

This is a WWII novel set in London throughout the war. Following two women as they help the war effort. Friedl is an Austrian trying to navigate being a double agent, and Paddy starts off as a nurse and then becomes a critical part of a British scheme to undermine the Germans.

Overall I enjoyed this one, the characters were engaging and I loved the friendships throughout the book. I loved the connection to Miss Moneypenny! It was very much focused on the intelligent efforts which I do find interesting.

Unfortunately I’m not sure how memorable this one will be after time goes on, but I do think anyone who enjoys historical fiction will like this one. It was just a bit slow and steady for what I was looking for.

Thank you to @harpercollinsca for my copy!

Thank you to @uplitreads and @williammorrowbooks for a digital ARC and ALC through @netgalley

While I’m not much of a James Bond enthusiast, I was very intrigued by this historical fiction based on the woman who inspired the Miss Moneypenny character. I can not imagine what it would have been like to lie to everyone close to her, even her husband in order to fulfill her duty. I continue to be amazed at how much I learn about WWII even after the amount of historical fiction I’ve read on the subject.

WWII is one my favorite genres so I have read a lot of books about this time in our history. Christine Wells tells the story of behind the scenes WWII. The story of the spies and not what people typically think of about the war. Paddy is a newlywed who has much more than the secretary job she tells everyone. Friedl is from Austria and is a double agent between England and Germany. The story is told from both ladies POV and for much of the story they are separate from each other. I was fascinated by the tasks these ladies were asked to do and carried out with such brilliance. I always love reading about the lessor known parts of WWII. I would recommend this book to readers of Kristin Harmel, and Kate Quinn.

Didn’t hold my attention too much. Only the parts that reminded me of the movie The Courier.
