My rating is honestly purely based on personal preference. (Isn't it always to some degree?) In the case of Tender, I had difficulties maintaining my interest in a lot of the stories. More specifically, I am not much of a fantasy fan and the fantastical stories in this collection left me wanting more. The stories that leaned more towards speculative, though? Absolutely incredible and I loved each one. In Honey Bear, a mother tends to her unusual child in a ravaged landscape. In Tender, a woman's life in a glass enclosure allows for plenty of reflection. In Fallow, a writer reckons with life in a small Christian community far from Earth.

I genuinely think that this collection would be perfect for someone who is more of a fantasy person than myself. Samatar is excellent at portrayals of isolation, bigotry, and magic. If this sounds like something you'd love, be sure to check out Tender when you get a chance!
