So I got the kindle version of this book from Amazon for free. Which I was pretty pleased with. The book is less than 200 pages so I had it done within a few hours. I will start this review by saying I do plan on reading the sequel just out of curiosity. The book is about a girl that goes to a posh boarding school for girls and next door is an all boys school. So, the book has boy drama and girl drama and some other funny antics. But, here is the problem I had with this book. The point of a story is to have a problem and a resolution. And that was not something that was extremely apparent in the story.
***SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT***
So the boys stole the girls underwear during a dance and the girls had to "get them back"? It just was not something that I figured someone could write a whole book about?
Other than the problem and resolution being weak the story was a quick read and was relatively enjoyable.

I got this book for an honest review.
I started this book one morning with the intention of reading a bit then doing some work for one of my many assignments due in- that did not work out well. Mainly because this book was such an easy read and I found myself reading chapter after chapter and then it was finished- I wish it had been longer.
The first few chapters are based heavily on character description mainly the main character and narrator of the story, Brooklyn- a new student arriving at a boarding school she will be attending- and introducing in detail each new character which Brooklyn meets as she starts her school year. The description of each new character is rich in information giving details about their personality traits that made them all into very different characters and made them instantly engaging to me. As the story progressed and relationships began to form I started to love or hate the different characters; my main loves being Brady and Jared, and my hates being Dave because I’m still annoyed with him.
The story is well paced introducing new characters and relationships exactly when they are needed- this isn't one of those annoying girl meets boy, boy is unable to sustain a relationship with girl, girl sits about waiting for him to change his mind books- there are plenty of other options and I hope Brooklyn explores these no matter how much I love Brady.
The story line is not one which has blaringly obvious twists and turns, it has subtle character developments which made me want to read more (which is why I wanted it to be longer).
This is defiantly to be added to my list of favourites and I can't wait to read more in this series of books.

Oh, what the hell. This was really fun. Now I have to read, or listen, to all of them. I like all the characters and am really invested in who the main character ends up with. It's not poorly written either.
Reading about an all girls private school which has connections with an all boys school, just made me want to think of what can happen as Brooklyn talks about the first day and seeing boys when talking about an all girls school.
It makes you want to read on and what can happen and every guy at the private boys school is hot and georgous and are like actors or famous in some way what can happen or should I say what can go wrong. I am really gripped to this series and need to read more.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book.
I love horse books, I love boarding school books (remind me of my favourite Enid Blyton books growing up), so I was pre-programmed to like this book. However, it exceeded my expectation, and I was sucked in by solidly defined characters, breezy writing, fun plot and great readability.
Horse crazy teens are going to love this series, and other middle aged people will reminisce about when they were horse crazy teens as they read this.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb proclaims that this book is 'fun and flirty.' It was right. This book has plenty of fun and plenty of flirtiness; the romance is light and nothing too serious, which I loved. My main complaint; I want more! That's a pretty awesome complaint for a book to have.
One of the big things that makes Taking the Reins stand out is the sheer number of boys in it. We have Brady, Jared, and "Will", (You can figure out why put quotation marks in by reading the book *wink*) and instead of it becoming a hodge-podge of hot highschoolers, it actually WORKED. Usually love triangles don't work so well, but in this book a) it's more of a love square and b) the book's romance is more of a light hearted crush and/or flirting, so it didn't bother me.
I liked Brooklyn a lot. She's the 'new girl' at the school, but instead of the regular struggles to fit in, she doesn't have that many struggles finding friends. Again, usually this would bother me, but due to how it was portrayed I didn't have any qualms with it; Rosewood girls look out for each other. The friends Brooklyn meets are girls I would want to hang out with, especially Emmie. There really aren't any 'mean girls' that are introduced, which was kind of refreshing because it seems like EVERY single YA book has them now.
I was definitely 'Team Brady' for this book. I will have to read on in the series to see if that changes (I have a tendency to change teams at times) but for this one, I am rooting for him. He was sweet, mature, and I just really liked his character.
I do have one small complaint; at the beginning the book could be a teeny bit predictable. I saw certain things coming a mile away. This is the only thing I didn't really like; other than that, this book was pretty fab.
I suppose that people who are thinking this book will mainly be about horses and horse riding could be a bit disappointed; I didn't have that expectation when I started reading, so I don't know. It's a part of the book, but it's not super huge, so I guess that could be a downside for certain readers.
If you are looking for a quick and cute contemporary, Taking the Reins would be perfect for you!
