I wasn’t sure about this book at first. It seemed pretty typical of the genre like it was going to be cookie cutter. However, I really enjoyed how it took its own turn in the genre. It was BRUTAL, just violence for the sake of it at some points. It really didn’t shy away from it. The character is both likable and dislikable as he becomes more like his enemy. It’s easy to admire his resolve and dedication.

I want to clarify, I enjoyed this book. The story was unique, world building was solid, the main character was lovely. However, the author uses the classic trope of every single woman in this story is either murdered or SA’d to give the main character something to fight for. I had a lot of really high hopes going in because this book was so highly recommended, but I cannot stand reading any work by an author who isn’t capable of writing women any other stories.
Graphic: Sexual assault
Moderate: Rape

4.5 - Amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't WAIT to read the rest of the series. I must admit, however, that the beginning of this book really dragged down the rating to 4 stars for me. The first chapters were so fast-paced that I didn't develop any attachment to the characters. Consequently, I felt a lack of emotion when Eo died, and even worse, a lack of awe for Darrow. He has all this "rage" within him, but we don't get to see it displayed until the second half of the book. The easiest comparison I can make is to Kelsier from Mistborn. I would run through fire for that fictional man. Darrow, on the other hand, just lacked character for me. ALSO, I can't stand the chapter titles. If you're going to give away what happens with the chapter titles, why bother writing the chapter? "Fall of House Apollo" - hmm, I wonder if they conquer House Apollo? Anyways, the second half of the book was a full 5 stars. SO MUCH FUN. I loved the rage, the trickery, the fear of betrayal!! I hope we get to see more development of Darrows character in the next books!
Also, please don't listen to anything I say. Nothing has hit the same since Mistborn.
