No plot, nothing memorable or distinctive about the story or the characters. Very boring.

Nostalgic and charming.
Weird and wonderful.
I only have vague memories of this from my childhood, and those mostly involved Mr. Toad driving a car. It’s grand to read this as an adult, a chapter or two before bedtime.
Some chapters are just what I wanted them to be: tales of friendship and adventure, good meals had on riverbanks, field mice singing Christmas carols.
But other chapters had less appeal for me. Toad was probably the star of the show for me as a child, but now I find him annoying. And sometimes the story just got a bit too carried away from the slow seasonal plodding pace I was enjoying.
I still really enjoyed it for the most part. It was like finding a treasure chest, but not really having use for like 25% of the treasure.

I found this book really charming, its like a cosy fantasy book for before that genre was really a thing. I think I'd have really like this if I'd read it as a child.
The chapters are almost like short stories following the 4 characters of Mole, Rat, Toad and Badger. I did find myself enjoying the chapters that feature Toad and his antics the most, the ones without Toad were a touch boring at times, but I did enjoy the friendship between Mole and Rat.
Speaking of Toad he's a whole mood, the shenanigans he gets up to are the highlight of the book as they're a blast to read. The least realistic thing about this book isn't the talking animals, it's the fact that Mole, Rat and Badger continue to be friends with Toad.
