Finally a new Alex McKnight story, I am a little sad that it mostly takes place outside the environment of the upper peninsula that we usually see our hero. But it's an Alex McKnight story so who cares. This is one great rollercoaster of a thriller and well worth the wait. I only hope that the next one will arrive soon.

While this is a very good book, an Alex McKnight book it is NOT. What makes this series extra special is the setting and the cast of characters. Agree with some of the other reviewers that i could plug in any character into the lead role and this still be a very good book. But to me, without the normal setting and the characters we have grown to love over the years, this was no Alex book.
Hamilton still produced a book that could have been five stars, but because he put this into this incredible series and tried to pass it off he only gets four stars from me.

Disappointing after reading most of the Alex McKnight books. This one has little of the fun and joyful interactions that McKnight has with his UP friends. And the book is just filled with darkness from the beginning to the end. I hope this book isn't a sign of things to come in this series.

Better than average and in the big scheme of things and certainly kept me interested and made for a quick read. Maybe a little darker than his typical but still one of the very good writers you can depend on.
I definitely recommend this series and still think the first, A Cold Day in Paradise, is one of the best of the entire genre!

This was okay. Never really understood the killers obsession with the last victim. Not inclined to keep reading the series though it looks like it might be taking a new direction

You know-- I really like Hamilton's Alex McKnight series, set in Michigan's U.P. It has all the features that make a crime thriller series fun: quirky characters, well-developed plots, a unique setting. This book has none of those.
It takes McKnight out of Michigan and plops him down in Phoenix, which I thought would be interesting. But it wasn't. In fact, the book was a long slog of unremittingly violence. Whole chapters are nothing more than shoot-outs, gruesome torture of women, hand-to-hand fighting, terror, terror, terror. He never lets the reader rest or wonder what comes next, or how things fit together. There's a bad guy-- a seriously bad guy-- and when you hear why he's tracking Alex, well...
Hamilton has written many better books.

3.5 stars. I have been a fan of Steve Hamilton and the Alex McKnight books since A Cold Day In Paradise came out 20 years ago. I was a little disappointed that Paradise, Michigan only makes a cameo appearance this time, but, hey, it's Alex McKnight. Fast paced and suspenseful, from Phoenix to Grand Rapids, my only qualifier is that you read it quickly and don't overthink it because it does require a suspension of disbelief probably one too many times. Not that that will stop me from running out and purchasing the next Alex McKnight as soon as it comes out.

I did not realize this was part of a series. That being said, it was a very easy read and I did not feel like I was missing anything by not having read previous books. The book was a fast read because after the first three or four chapters, I could not put it down. I wanted to know what was going to happen next on this manhunt between a former cop and a psycho serial killer who, on the surface, had nothing in common.

In general, I like this series. And Hamilton hadn't written an Alex McKnight book in a few years, so I was looking forward to it. But it wasn't set in the UP, so it didn't have the usual sidekick characters. I just felt this could have been a standalone novel rather than billing it as a McKnight novel and then not having the aspects I like about those books. Still a good story.
