Probably one of the strongest (and fastest paced!) of the early Green Rider books, this introduces us to a wider and more loveable cast, a more in-depth understanding of the political and world that we're in, and just some fun adventure. It's not excellent - at times Karigan has very little agency and is basically pulled from plot point to plot point without much to do with it. But, it's still snappy fun in an enjoyable world.

I quite enjoy this series - Karigan is an interesting character, and the structure of the world is fascinating.

I thought First Rider’s call was a great sequel! It was a little slow moving sometimes but because of that, we learned a lot more about the characters, the world, and the history of the world and why they are in the position they are. I loved that Karigan is a strong female lead but in a realistic way. She’s relatively young and scared but courageous and strong. She bravely puts her duty first even when it’s hard or scary. She isn’t looking for a relationship and its soul has a breath of fresh air from the constant love triangles that drown literature today. The politics in the book don’t feel overwhelming and honestly mirror a lot of what’s going on today and could really be analyzed deeply if you wanted to but they also move the story along without bogging it down. The magic system is still being built as even in the world the magic system is a mystery but I do love what we know about it. I’m excited to read the rest of the series!

It was a decent book with an intriguing plot line. However, I found myself often confused by the complicated history/structure of Scardonia. The combination of this confusion and the slow pacing left me quite frustrated. I don't think I'll be reading the third installment.
