This book was recommended to me by my sister who manages a children’s book shop so I knew it was always going to be a good one. It was a book from the perspective of this lovely gorilla, Sally Jones, and she goes on many adventures to try and prove the innocence of her best friend. It’s so wholesome and funny and I know it’s aimed at children but it gives a lot of Narnia vibes and I do love a good children’s book every now and then. Also 10/10 illustrations!

Winner of the 2018 Batchelder award, The Murderer’s Ape by Swedish writer Jakob Wegelius is a great read following the story of a gorilla who has learned to read and write as she tells the story of her adventure. Sally Jones is trying to survive and figure out how to help her best friend after he is wrongfully accused of murder. Full of twists and turns, this book is an absolute delight and features amazing adventures across the world. This book would be a fun read for upper elementary students and middle schoolers, and it could have great applications on the mystery genre as well as how to keep a plot interesting throughout.
