I absolutely adore this book. It was the perfect capture of the time period and being a lesbian. The sweet, forbidden teenage love story is always a great plot in my opinion but to add the amazing historical accuracy of homophobia and racism just makes it even better. It almost feels like I'm reading a diary of someone during that time.

This book handles so many of these important themes in an amazing way. As much as we have made progress in this world it's really important to keep telling these stories of the truth of the past. The author chosing to use period accurate words for minorities is just amazing. It really puts you into these characters feelings and what it was like to live during this time.

The bar raid made me absolutely sob. It was the great representation of it and I can tell the author really put a lot of research into it.

The common and prevalent topics of this book, is something many could argue is wrong but it is all done with so much respect and care that I can tell the author genuinely wants to tell the true story of the time.

Would recommend this to anyone; this made 400 pages feel like 50!
So well written and just a beautiful story showing me a piece of history I hadn’t ever learned about!
Every character felt so real and full, nothing was glossed over!

- beautiful book. just absolutely gorgeous
- i feel like i may have liked it a little bit more and rated it 5 stars if i wasn't in a huge reading slump
- was it a little slow for my taste? yeah. was it still good? absolutely. would i recommend this as a fantastic queer novel? 100%

- i'm gonna need a story like 50 years in the future where they are living together in a world that is more welcoming to queer people

Loved 🫶
• Having a main character who is exploring her sexualit and sexual expression as well as a love interest who is a masculine presenting lesbian and other character  who are also butches and femmes is very powerful 

• The author knew who her target audience was and the effort and research put into this books about Chinese and queer history is something to be appreciated 


Did not like 
• The flashbacks, even thought I understand why they are necessary (I get it it gives me information about relationship dynamics and the history of Lily's family) I felt like, as a reader, they were just kinda boring and I was always hoping to get through them so I could get to the interesting story

• It has a lot of triggers, especially for someone queer or who is a minority
