It felt like the story could have wrapped up earlier. Reading through the rest of the plot summary, a lot of the latter parts seemed like unnecessary prolonging that didn’t add much to the book

Well, that was completely ridiculous.

I will say, in the hands of a better writer this could have been a fascinating story about small town secrets, understanding disability, & gaining strength to overcome trauma. Archer was a really interesting character who was charming, endearing and relatable.

What we we got instead was really over-sugared tripe that seems to say “you don’t need therapy to overcome trauma, you just need LOVE!!” Give me a BREAK. It was clear from the beginning the author neither could nor cared to write about trauma with nuance & knowledge. Instead it was used as a stepping stone for these two characters to fall in love &  ~fix~ each other. This was ESPECIALLY true in the case of Bree, who goes through what sounds like a HORRIFIC experience, only to be magically cured of all her issues through one conversation with the hero. And she spends the rest of the book saying and doing all the perfect things to give Archer the ~strength~ he needs to become basically the king of the town, I kid you not.

The plot was contrived, the dialogue so cheesy you could spread it on a cracker, and I absolutely hated the fact that one of the villains was rehabilitated at the end — presumably bc he was too sexy to NOT have him star in his own book.

TL;DR: SO much YIKES happening in this, in spite of the interesting premise/hero. IMHO, stay far away.

Ich habe schon Bücher von der Autorin gelesen und war jetzt auf die Reihe gespannt.
Irgendwie hat mir was gefehlt.

according to google, author really has a ba in clinical psychology and yet decided that archer doesn't need professional help when he was WAY too codependant on bree and i know for a fact that's a direct consequence of trauma he went through as a child. don't even get me started on how poorly bree's ptsd was handled. and no, making love is not a permanent solution and it won't magically make all their problems disappear which is what i truly despised abt this book - the way bree was presented as archer's saviour even though she got mad at him when he decided to do this one thing for himself (sometimes to get better you need to be a little selfish and put urself first because newsflash- getting better/recovery is never easy and it's not all sunshine and rainbows even though i agree it could've been executed better but firmly believe archer leaving was extremely important for his own character development).

loved until all they did was have sex. felt like i was reading a wattpad fanfic
