Midwest small town atmospheric spooky times.
Pete, a boy with an abusive father/home, believes if he hunts down October Boy and wins, he can leave the town behind. He would have to leave his little sister behind. The stakes for him are so high.
The hunt begins and Pete begins to realize how things are really run. And how taking a life can impact someone and the community itself. How the ritual sacrifice changes everyone.
This would be a perfect read for Halloween. And I could totally see them expanding the worldbuilding and creating a miniseries with this source material.
The story is being told as if you already know what's going on which adds a disorienting element to the story. And then you start to learn a little bit about the origin of the October Boy... but also- not enough. When I finished reading, I was left with a lot of unanswered questions.
There is a lot of "before" that is missing- and definitely a lot of "after" that makes things super challenging since this book is so short.

I really enjoyed this book! The characters were well written, the book didn't rely too heavil on them other than to help narrate the story. The twist was a little unexpected, still liked it. The descriptions were VERY detailed which I loved!! Only reason I gave it 4.5 is because I wish we learned a bit more about a group of people and why they exist/do what they do. Still definitely recommend this book!

The narrator of the audiobook on Everand were awesome 🤩 but the story didn't work for me. Taste and colors I guess.
I went into this book expected a completely different story: more of a gory creature feature meets slasher hybrid. However that wasn’t the case.
It felt more like a slow build horror novel that was pulled out of a 70s or 80s literature era. I could see some comparisons to Stephen King’s Carrie with the writing and deliberate slow pace and characters.
The execution is pretty big criticism I had with Dark Harvest because the setup is intriguing, however if the writing took more time to explain Why this contest or “The Run” as the characters refer to it happens every year it could’ve improved it.
There is a tragic angle with two characters because whomever wins, loses, In a way.
I just wish we could’ve learned a little bit more about why this happening and while it does explain why these kids want to leave this town. Most of the book is left pretty Ambiguous.

This book was wild and sort of confusing. I didn't fully understand what was happening in the beginning and it was extremely frustrating. Then once I understood, the "why?" was never answered. Why did these things happen? What started it? It was ok. Not the best, but it was pretty creepy.
Quite easy to like, this one. Thrilled to know there's a movie being made.
Surprisingly fantastic. The perfect Halloween story, it's also got heart.
Cool, quick read. Very entertaining. Not scary, but definitely intense.
For sure gonna check out the movie adaptation.
