hmmmm maybe 3.5? this was super fun but i found myself feeling a little disoriented with all the perspective shifts. however i am very glad i read this. perfect pre halloween read.

Very descriptive.

Ohhhhhhh kay. Ok horror fans. I see you. I see how much you love Halloween stories and writers who can do that *thing* BUT
There are aspects of this story that I did not love and they kinda blew it for me.

3.5⭐️ for being such a short novel, I thought this was great. I think this would have been so much better if it had only explained why the people aren’t able/allowed to leave the town (or am I stupid and I missed it?). If you win, the prize is leaving and your family gets house, car and no bills for a year. But the winners never leave…Someone lmk. Anyways great short story. Perfect fall vibes!

This book is a compelling combination of Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Clowns in the Cornfield by Adam Cesare. But told in a darkly chummy, “You know what it’s like in our crazy hometown” sort of way.

October Boy is terrifying. But the men in town are the real monsters. A dead end town with no chance of escape, whose secrets and hopelessness is compounded by rampant corruption.

I totally enjoyed this book. Read it quickly while gripping its pages. Heroes that break your heart and villains that curdle your soul.
