A good story, but the I found the writing a little stuttering and counterproductive to the tempo.
However, an interesting read for a cold, dark winters night.

I might have bias, because I watched the movie before reading the book- and the movie was amazing.
I also think it told the story better unfortunately.
I was really turned off by how this story read (all of the 2nd POV’s were unnecessary and felt weird). Also, while the general story was the same between the two, the movie also had a single narrative that tied it all together, while the book is all over the place.
I honestly love the concept of this book, and the October Boy. It feels like Children of the Corn meet the Nightmare before Christmas, and I totally dug it! It was so amazing, and the comparison of the October Boy to Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny just made it so much more awesome.
But this book dragged, so bad, and there was no one I was truly invested in outside of the October Boy. Which once again, the movie fixed.
So yeah… it’s honestly an amazing story, I just didn’t like the execution the book did.

At the beginning of the book, I was expecting something on par with a Goosebumps story but as it went on it definitely got more gruesome. Being told what happens to the winners of the Run was hard to imagine. It had a lot going for it but it ran out of steam in the last 30 pages. The ending left so much to be desired.

if i was starved for five days and told the only way i could eat was to chase down and kill a sentient creature made of atomic fireballs and chocolate bars, i simply wouldn’t. now maybe if it were made of something like chipotle bowls and iced matcha lattes-

I really wanted to like this book, but it felt like it was written by a high school boy.
