Classic story of the main three DC Comics characters, as Matt Wagner tends to do (refer to his work on Batman), brings back memories of Bruce Timm's Batman and Superman TV shows. I truly enjoyed it.

Like a great episode of Batman or Superman animated series. Got Superman really right. Didn't really go anywhere, but that wasn't the point.

Rating: 3 out of 5 | Grade: C; Holy, Sexual Harassment Batman!

What the Hell did I just read? Matt Wagner's Trinity comic, which appropriately is 3 issues, seems like a story which would be more comfortable in 60s & 70s era of more chauvinistic comics.

The story is campy but enjoyable, surrounding around a plot where Ras al Ghul gets his hands on some ballistic missiles and is going to use them to cripple the global communication network and oil fields. Thus, sowing the seeds to civilizational collapse.

Joining him in this evil endeavor are the ever-gullible Bizarro & Artemis of the Bana-Mighdall amazons. The Holy Trinity of DC, Batman/ Superman/ Wonder woman, still new to this team business, have to stop them. As usual.

The part that really grates me is how OOC the characters are acting. It almost feels like Wagner doesn't understand their nature. Even for an elseworlds type story it's pretty jarring.

I mean, there is one scene where
Spoiler Batman walks in on a Diana bathing in a stream, with all the associated gratuitous imagery; and then proceeds to kiss her for no reason.

Which is then never addressed by either party. I know that some wonder woman comics have her be bewitching to men, but this is the freaking Dark knight, whose made of sterner stuff. Him succumbing to such a superficial charm effect seems really disingenuous

Then there is the big baddy, Ras al Ghul. He may be many things, a shadow cult leader, ecological terrorist, megalomaniac with delusions of grandeur, but he's not a leering Weinstein like misogynistic molester of women. He's the freaking demon's head, yet half the scenes between him and Diana involve cringe leering dialogue, which makes you get vibes of Leah & Jabba. It's clear that the writer doesn't really get this character.

Other than that, the art is a mixed bag. There are some breakout panels, when it comes to the environment & the full spread superhero poses, but otherwise it comes across stocky and jarring.

Particularly for the environment, the illustrators have made good use of light, shadows, constrast and coloring to set the different locales apart in terms of themes and feel.

Basically, it's read once and then forget. Pick it up at your own behest. Ciao.

The story was great and the art is fantastic. Here's a nitpicky thing: several times it seemed like the word balloons didn't flow. I've been reading comics a long time and I can always follow the progression across and down the page, but on quite a few pages I felt like they didn't follow "industry standards."

So often, stories with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman go horribly awry for me. I'm not much of a Justice League fan, and I think the focus on conflicts between Batman and Superman often undermine the stories they appear in together.

This volume, while not stellar storytelling, is, at least, a fun read. You get the first team up between The Big Three, and Wagner spends absolutey no time telling any of their origins (all hail Matt Wagner).

I also enjoy that there is a villain from each of their pantheons, but it's none of their Top Villains. No Lex, no Joker, no Cheetah.

I recommend this for Justice League fans looking for a sort of Year Zero to the formation of the JLA, people who like superhero teamups where the heroes have conflicts but don't go all Civil War over it, fans of Matt Wagner's art, anyanyone looking for a fun silver-agey story from the 21st century.

I’m personally a fan of Matt Wagner’s art - it’s not my favorite but it gets a fun comic-y vibe, so that was a plus for me. I think he gets a lot right with this story; Clark and Diana feel well developed, and Bruce mostly is. Wagner’s is certainly a darker Batman, which is fine from time to time. Bizarro isn’t a character I’m overly familiar with but he felt true to other stories I’ve read, and empathetic here. Artemis, however, fell a little flat for me. She feels like a generic 90s punk teenager stereotype of some sort who was mostly shoehorned I’m so that a Wonder Woman foil could be present. My biggest problem with the story was how overtly rapey Ra’s al Ghul is. He muses on how he can use Diana for hours of entertainment at one point when she’s captured, and later speaks about how the Amazons would make “good breeding stock” to repopulate the earth. That doesn’t feel very Ra’s to me, but more importantly, that just feels like using rape for shock value, which isn’t okay. It’s a little older of a story now, so I can give it a bit of leeway in that regard, but I can only hope that comics steer away from sexual violence and trauma for shock value in years to come. (Without the rape threats, I would’ve given it a 4/5)

This was a decent origin story of the trinity.
