I loved that we got to stay in the Bridge Kingdom universe and follow another couple. I loved the action and seeing some of the previous events from different perspectives, and really the main issue keeping this from being a 5-star read for me is the pacing. This fell into the same pitfall as other romantasy I read where they don't edit the story down and you could feel where it slumped throughout.
Kerris and Zarrah are fantastic and I can't wait to see more of them. The new (ish) villain in this one is chilling in the best way.

4.5 stars.
the absolute shock and horror on my face reading the last 50 pages of this….
it went YAY KERIS KING boo petra killed her sister YAY SERIN DEAD boo zarrah gets exposed YAY PETRA ALMOST DEAD boo she gets saved and zarrah is going to devils island… the ups and downs were crazy im still having heart palpitations
i think the middle section where zarrah is imprisoned could have been at least 50 pages shorter, especially because we kind of already knew some of what happened from the traitor queen
the chemistry between zarrah and keris is honestly so much better than lara and aren, although i like lara more as a fmc. i like keris SOOOO much more than aren. but like why are they almost fucking through a barred window. ykw at least hes not fucking her while shes DYING of BLOOD LOSS after HEAVY BATTLE… yeah…

3⭐️’s.. This was a good book. Easily could have been 4⭐️’s but I really have a problem with writers writing two books about the same events told from 2 different points of view and that’s what this was. It becomes too redundant to read.

Another great book in the Bridge Kingdom series! I think I might have enjoyed this one better than the Traitor Queen which I really enjoyed.
Unlike the first two books which focused more on action and war, this boom was palace intrigue and harem politics. Which, I believe helped save the book from feeling like a repeat of the prior duo.
If you read the prior book you have an idea of how things turn out — they all escape imprisonment. This foresight wasn’t hindered thanks to the books concentration on palace intrigue and a deeper introduction to the harem and the politics that follow. It was also very interesting getting a new view on events from Traitor Queen, namely how terrifying Lara feels from the outside lol.
Zarrah and Keris both feel different than our prior duo of Aren & Lara. Just like Lara and Aren, they’re very lovably main characters! Zarrah, our woman lead, is the honor obsessed warrior in comparison to the more atonement & redemption drive that was Lara. Keris is of course our man lead. Unlike Aren, he comes off as more self-focused; his goals are what matters and everything else is secondary.
I liked how the world building was also increased a bit! I am hopeful, based on hints in the book, that we will be exploring Valcotta more thoroughly in the next book.
The romance was, again, a heartthrob that I enjoyed. Though, I think I enjoyed the romance between Lara & Aren than Zarrah & Keris, but that may just be the aftereffect of the lovely angsty romance in the prior book.

I’m not gonna lie, I was hesitant about reading this book after TBK and TTQ because I realized the story’s focus/narrative would no longer be Aren & Lara. In others reviews, some people said they didn’t like this book and the next one (The Endless War) as much as they liked the first two and that The Inadequate Heir felt redundant because it has some of the same dialogue that was in TTQ. Regardless, I went ahead and put them on hold at my library and I’m glad I did. It turns out that I’m quite different 😂 I actually liked The Inadequate Heir and The Endless War better than the first 2!! While it’s no longer from Aren/Lara’s POV, I quickly took a liking to Keris and Zarrah.
As for the remarks about it being the same dialogue that was in TTQ, I personally didn’t feel like I was rereading TTQ. This book is during the same time period and while it repeats some of the same events that occurred in the previous book, it felt new because it’s from two different POVS. It actually answered some questions I had and I was like “so that’s why that happened” or “that’s why that was said!”
〰️Didn’t Like:〰️
❥ How Zarrah’s mother’s deathtook place on a cross. That’s one of my “triggers” and it made me feel VERY
uncomfortable.
