REVIEW:
When Karina Halle finished the EIT series I was sad to loose the world and characters she created. But thankfully she didn’t want to completely leave that world, bringing back my favorite duo Dex and Perry but focusing now on Perry’s sister Ada. I loved the idea of the two sisters having to deal with the similarities in their ability to deal with the horror of monsters and ghosts. I loved Ada was fully introduced into what her sister had gone through, but that she had to deal with a different connection to the dead and evil.
Veiled follows Ada Palomino, whom has never really gotten over the death of her mother. She has tried to feel normal and get ready for her new start in design school. But her dreams are getting worse; she’s starting to feel as if someone is there in her room watching her. She also has been hearing her mothers voice; the voice is anything but pleasant. Ada confides in her sister, who has dealt with the evil that seems to be coming after Ada now. But Perry doesn’t want to step back into the horrors that she and her husband went through. Luckily Ada has a dream man who seems to be guiding her and protecting her. He also happens to be living next door. Together they have to stop the evil that never left and possible step into the Veil to find her mother.
Ada is just as awesome as she was in the EIT series, still very close with her sister and always bickering with Dex. But her dreams and connection to her dead mother are starting to affect her social life. Ada is very different from Perry, her love for her mom as well as guilt triggered a connection to the Veil, and they wanted Ada and are using her mother to get her there. I was absolutely creeped out with the fact that Ada was staying in her sister’s room, after everything that happened there. I’m not sure if that was her being brave, stubborn, or foolish, but I would not have stayed in that room. What I also enjoyed was that halle incorporated the father a little more. He began experiencing dreams, though his daughters protected him from the real truth. Then there is Ada’s new relationship with the mysterious Jay, her neighbor and dream man. He has a similar “job” as Maximus from the EIT series, but he and Ada become something more together.
Jay is trying to be Ada’s guide, teach her the limitations and protect her from the very things she’s actually trying to find. She wants t save her mother and he wants her to let it go. Ada is very head strong and eventually pushes Jay to a point where he can resist her in more ways than one. I loved their dynamic and the fact that they form an understanding of right and wrong when it comes to saving her mother.
Overall I loved everything about this continuation into the Veil and the EIT world I totally missed reading about. The romance, the super creepy ghost aka demons, the introduction to new characters and bringing the old gain back, was just what I wanted. Halle always knows how to make her fans happy and ask for more. I’m hoping we get more of Ada and Jay but I was also pleased with the ending, that if we don’t get more, I wont be freaking out with a cliffhanger.

QUESTIONS ABOUT VEILED: (This is part of the Synopsis...my thoughts about the answers to these questions is in BOLD TYPE)
Q: Is this YA?
A: No. The main character is 18 and there is sex, crude language and violence in the book. Readers sensitive to those components may not find the book suitable. If you are a reader who doesn’t like a lot of the “F” word, this is your warning…. All true. Luckily, the "F" word and I are old friends.
Q: Is there a cliffhanger?
A: Nope! There’s also no cheating and no love triangle (think I’ve covered the bases there!) All true!
Q: Do I need to read the series (Experiment in Terror) that Veiled is a spinoff of first?
A: Nope. Absolutely not. I disagree...I feel like you would have inside knowledge that would enhance this story since they're a ton of references to that series.
Veiled stands alone from that series...It didn't feel like this is true, although I'm totally guessing since I haven't read it.
Don’t listen to anyone say otherwise. EIT fans are very passionate about their series and want to share the love (and I love them for it) BUT Veiled was written specifically for those people who haven’t read EIT.
And furthermore…most importantly…IF you do decide after reading Veiled that you would like to read EIT, then I promise, promise, promise that your enjoyment of that series will not be spoiled or compromised. Trust me on this. EIT is too epic of a series to be spoiled.
PS if you are a passionate EIT fan, Veiled is a great starter to get people interested in this whole “world.” Also, all your favorites do appear in this story as it takes place right after Dust to Dust. There are definite instances that feel like spoilers to EIT, especially since it takes place after the 9th and final book in the series.
Q: Is it horror? Your other series was and I don’t handle scary very well…
A: No, it’s paranormal romance (though I promise you there are no vampires or werewolves), and while there are creepy elements to the story, it wouldn’t be classified as horror. You’ll be fine. This is also true.
MY THOUGHTS⇢
Overall, it wasn't too bad, if you're into this type of urban fantasy/paranormal romance, this could be your jam...especially if you've read the Experiment in Terror Series. Sadly, though, after finishing Veiled, I'm not feeling like I want to read the EIT series, myself. I already know where they (Perry and Dex) end up, and I even know a few mishaps that they get into. Also since finishing this book, my second by this author, I'm thinking I'm not necessarily a fan of her writing style.
The narration was acceptable, but it could have been presented or produced better...it was too quiet by far, especially when she whispered.

This was not what I expected. I try not to read any reviews before I pick up a book so my judgement isn't swayed.
I loved the direction it was going in. The details, the story line, the mystery. But it seemed a lot of the descriptions were used again and again making it feel a bit repetitive. It also felt like there was a huge build up to something more epic beyond the mission they took.
I don't want to give anything away and what they did accomplish wasn't easy. It just seemed they were building up towards A but than all of sudden B happen and BAM - a few pages later we're almost towards the completion of the "off course" mission and a few weeks have gone by and everything is normal'ish.
Idk -- seemed rushed and incomplete.

I’m a big fan of Karina Halle’s contemporary romances, and I’ve been curious about her paranormal books for a while. As curious as I am about the Experiment in Terror series, it’s a commitment. One I’m willing to make, but first I wanted to get a feel for the author’s paranormal series. Although Veiled is set in the same world as the Experiment in Terror books – it is, in fact, a spin-off – it does work perfectly fine as a standalone story.
I will be honest and say it took me a while to be sucked into this one. As always with Karina Halle, I was happy to devour this in a single sitting. However, a few chapters passed before I was hooked in the way I had hoped to be. I think this is because I didn’t quite feel the connection until things were explained clearly. As I said, this works as a standalone novel. However, I think the connection to the characters and their reasons for doing things comes easier if readers have read the Experiment in Terror books. That is not to say it does not work as a standalone, simply that it felt a bit slow until the information finally made sense to me.
Once the story was moving and I understood the details, I was hooked. I was desperate to see how things played out and could not get enough of the story. It was a creepy read – not quite horror, but with enough moments to make your heart pound – with plenty of elements that have me wanting more of Ada Palomino.
Without a doubt, Veiled has increased my desire to dive into more of the author’s paranormal work. Not just the next book in this series, but it also has increased my need to dive into the Experiment in Terror books.

"I feel like each day is leading me down a dark path I might not be able to come back from."

First off, YOU CAN READ VEILED WITHOUT HAVING READ EXPERIMENT IN TERROR. Wait, did you get that?? YOU CAN READ VEILED WITHOUT HAVING READ EXPERIMENT IN TERROR!!!
Okay, now that we have that out of the way, you're gonna read Veiled now, right??? Right?? (You'd better).
I first discovered Karina Halle when I saw a trusted reviewer on Goodreads review one of her Experiment in Terror books. So one day during jury duty I picked up Darkhouse and the rest is history. I fell in love. So when EIT ended and there was a possibility of an Ada book, I waited and hoped and dreamed. And it didn't come. When I gave up hope that Veiled would happen, something magic happened: Karina wrote it!

So I am beyond ecstatic we have Ada's story, it truly is a special gift to EIT fans and quite honestly, any Karina fan. I want ALL my friends to read this book!!!! Beware, because I will start pushing this one on you if I haven't started already.
"You have a fight ahead of you, one that goes far beyond what you've seen in your dreams."
Now let's get back on track. Veiled is the story of Ada Palamino, eighteen years old and already well aware of the fact that ghosts and demons haunt our world. After the death of her mother, two years later she is still reeling. Her nightmares become more vivid and strange things begin to happen around her. On top of this, a sexy ginger from her dreams pops up in real life, meant to be her guide and protector. As crazier stuff keeps happening, Ada must learn to find her inner strength and fight the demons surrounding her, figurative and literal.

"The past doesn't define us. It's what we do here and now, today that does. This world was built on second chances."
Veiled is equal parts scary, sexy and intense. This is a book where I resented needing to accomplish real world tasks because I wanted to constantly be in Ada and Jay's world! I also made the mistake reading the majority of this book at night, not a wise idea. I was pee in my pants terrified at some parts and wished I had my own sexy ginger to keep me safe and warm at night. Speaking of sexy gingers, leave it to Karina Halle to create a hot sexy GINGER that I swooned over. And I'm not even really attracted to gingers!!!! But Jay is the sexy, smoldery exception.
I loved the feel of this book, it was uniquely Ada if that makes any sense. This book was about Ada transitioning from a girl to a woman and finding her inner strength to fight for the people she loved. Ada overcame her fears and her demons, fighting for the side of good while trying to survive at the same time. Ada and Jay were perfect for each other, their romance sigh worthy. I would love to see more of the two of them, but I am happy enough for this book to have happened!!!
Again I would like to reiterate, Veiled can be read as a standalone despite technically being a spinoff book! You do not have to read the Experiment in Terror series first (unless you want to).
"You're destined for something great, Ada. I know this. And it's an honor to help see you through it."

I enjoyed this book so much! It was my first paranormal read from Karina Halle. I can't wait to start the EIT series now!
EIT fans! I was not sure how I felt about Ada. She was not my favorite character but I didn't hate her either. I'm a Dex all the way fan. This book however was really great! I read it in about a day and a half, I just couldn't put it down. Great stand alone or a continuation to the what happened next...which I also love. Thanks for that!
