I wasn’t sure how I felt about this story, until I read the author’s note at the end. It all made sense after that and my heart actually hurts for Peyton as the character in the book but more so for Kami for having to relive this in order to write this story.

Usually I spent most of my time somewhere in my fantasy niche. I like being surrounded by touches of magic, some witches, some monsters or immortal lovers. But, I was really curious what Garcia would do with a contemporary story and the blurb of this one just kinda spoke to me. So, yesterday evening I picked this book up and started reading.

I had actually planned to stop at 50 pages read, but I ended up reading more than 100. I just couldn't put the book away. The story was gripping, the issues and dilemma's were really realistic and well written and the pace of the story seemed fast. In the middle of the book that pace does slow down a little, but I was really curious where this story would go and the ending of the book didn't disappoint.

Peyton's learning curve and growing curve is actually quite nice to watch. Mostly because her reactions to people around her and to events happening to her seem so realistic and true. Although she's completely different from me, it was easy to understand her, to understand her emotions, where she was coming from, why she was reacting the way she was and why she was making mistakes. Apart from that, it was truly nice to actually witness her learning from those mistakes.

Although I do think that the pace of the book could have been better, with some more development in the middle part of the book, I overall think that this is a really nice and good book, especially considering the fact that contemporary is truly not my genre and not something I usually enjoy much.

The synopsis for the lovely reckless doesn't truly speak to me, not like this one did, but who knows. Maybe I will give it a try in the future. I'm hopeful that that one might be able to surprise me too!

My first Kami Garcia book and I was left hoping for more. Overall, a pretty average YA contemporary.

I received an ecopy of this through netgalley; however all opinions are my own.

The emotional scars an abusive relationship can leave on your body and mind can sometimes be debilitating. I'm glad authors such as Kami Garcia have these types of books for readers of all ages. High school was a long time ago for me but the emotional scars my abusive relationship left on me still darken my moods from time to time.

Thank Kami for putting this wonderful book out!

Original romance and well-developed characters.

Annoying mean-girl stuff had me rolling my eyes. I am tired of bitchiness between girls but I continue to read YA hoping it will get better.

This book was interesting—once we got through the first section when she gets hurt and moves away, it’s interesting.  But what a horrible book for teens. So much underage drinking and sex—totally unnecessary (and Some of it quite graphic).  And unrealistic views of relationships (the most authentic part was the dating violence and attempted control, unfortunately).  And so much violence in it. Certainly not a book I would recommend for YA readers.

Peyton Rios is ready for life now that she got into her first choice university, but finds out her boyfriend's dark secret and he pushes her down a flight of stairs in a violent rage, her knee shatters. Peyton stays with her uncle in Tennessee to aid with her recovery and meets Owen, who is hiding his own secrets.

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this novel, it wasn't too dark but managed to balance mature themes and romance extremely well! Peyton was a sympathetic character and you can emphasise with her easily. Even the supporting characters were great!
