The focus on the decay in nature really worked for me in this book. It really upped the creep factor. I also loved the horror element. There was just this crawling feeling of creeping terror that grew inside me throughout the whole book. That being said, it was nice to have some humor every once in a while and Tyler’s character really brought that. What I didn’t need though, was the high school bullying. Obviously it’s a ya book, so high school drama is to be expected, but it just didn’t hit for me. also it has to be said that some of these characters have REMARKABLE pain tolerance.
Graphic: Child death, Death of parent, Murder, Sexual assault, Vomit, Kidnapping, Blood, Sexual harassment, Suicide, and Toxic friendship
Moderate: Bullying and Gun violence

Different than expected. I did enjoy the creepy otherworldly rotting atmosphere and aesthetics but the story didn't get there for me.

i was absolutely intoxicated by the first half of this book. the second half fell a little flat for me, but this is probably because i read the last 50% during one of the worst weekends of my life. i wasn’t mentally all there & this book probably deserved more from me for the last half. for that, i’m genuinely sorry.
that being said, i still highly recommend this book. the writing is absolutely eloquent. the story is wonderfully weird and unique. and that cover!! who could say no?
