The Broken Vows

Catharina Maura

3.89 AVERAGE

I’ll start with how appalled I am about the lack of trigger warnings in this book. I went into it not expecting any real triggers based on the many other Cat Maura books I’ve read (and enjoyed) in the past.
We get about 40% in and we have on page suicide, followed by a detailed suicide letter to the FMC after the fact.
I went back to check the trigger warnings, to see that it had a note that they are at the end of the book because of “spoilers”, which is simply not good enough.

The Broken Vows was far too long in my opinion, and I don’t think they should have ended up together.
They both did atrocious things to one another repeatedly throughout the story, then would fall into bed over and over again.

I found the plot to be so repetitive that I would often skip chunks of text because it felt so similar to what I’d already read before.
The smut was also repetitive and happened far too much without actually adding anything to the story. There’s only so many times I can read the same sex scene in a book, and this one far exceeded it.

At this point, I hope Grandma Anne dies in the next book because of how much she meddles and interferes in all her grandchildren’s lives, but it’s made okay because everything always works out in the end.

Hopefully the next book is better, but I was incredibly disappointed in this book as a whole.

The plot was fine, the spice was

Celeste was always bullied by Zane growing up and hated him for it. When she left to go to college she thought she was rid of him. Now she is back and she can’t escape him.
Zane had always loved Celeste and wanted her as his. All he had to do was convince Grandma Anne she was the one he should marry. Grandma refused because of a family rival with her family.
Celeste and Zane fell in love and making plans on their future until something tragic happens that leaves their world rocked to the core. Zane is attacking Celeste’s family business to near bankruptcy. It is now 5 years later and Grandma Anne and her grandfather have agreed to merge their family business. Zane is forced to marry Celeste.
I love Cat’s books. Each one she write is like an emotional roller coaster. I love the chemistry before Celeste and Zane but I also can feel each one of them hurt as well and felt sorry for both of them

It took me awhile to get through this book. I’ve had to put it down sooo many times because I was getting frustrated with the characters. Celeste was treated so poorly and so was Zane. I was annoyed that they simply could not communicate!

Catharina is my favorite author. I hope Lex’s story is better.

This book had me in TEARS ALL DAY. This is by far the best one of the series. Seeing how the relationship changes and grows felt like i was right there with them. There were so many heartbreaking moments but it was so addictive. If I could give this book a million stars, I would.

Zane lived to infuriate Celeste when they were younger. They were childhood rivals and thought that what they felt was hate. But how thin is the line between love and hate? These two are on their journey to figure it out. Now that they are working at their families businesses, they're competing on their largest scale yet. And they're flirting with the line of love and hate. When they start to fall for each other, they didn't realize how hard they were falling. But when tragedy strikes, both are left wondering what was real.

Now, Zane is angry and out for revenge. When Celeste's company is on the verge of bankruptcy, their grandparents step in. The companies will merge, and Celeste and Zane will get married. Feelings are still high, and Zane isn't ready to let go of the past.

I cried so much during this read. The passion, and angst, and true heartbreak broke my heart. But it was put back together by the end. This story was one of my faves of all time.

this book pissed me off.
i like zane, i think celeste is boring and mediocre at best, he deserved better.

granny lived more than enough. it's time for her to go.
