Nagata Kabi's writing is comforting precisely because it is uncomfortable. She doesn't turn her lived experience into a digestable form. You worry about her as you're reading. It's very reassuring to see the less instagrammable aspects of mental health depicted so genuinely. Sometimes suffering doesn't come with a moral at the end and a happily ever after, and that's not something to be ashamed about.

The emotions of loneliness, love, guilt, and struggles with addiction felt very compelling and resonant as Kabi’s works always do.
