Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades (1834), in its exploitation of a chiefly ‘Grimm’ precedent, simultaneously gambles on, and transcends, the irrational rhetoric of the fantastic through the binary personage Germann. Ridiculing Tomsky’s non-linear conte as ‘a tale’ (p. 22), Germann ostensibly reconciles calculated realism and ‘disordered fancy’ (p. 37); the progeny of a Russified German, Germann is a borderline figure, at once familiar and a romantic curio. Germann, thus characterised as Byronic, masquerades himself as the third contestant of ‘the story’ (p. 36) in a bid to re-establish (chrono)logical fabula as opposed to spoken siuzhet.
It was surprising how the book could be English or American. It had the same atmosphere as Edith WHarton, for example. I liked the short sentences, I liked that the story was to the point, yet it was enough to be able to imagine everything in detail. I think this was my first text from Pushkin, at least since school...
I was fascinated with the story and it didn't disappoint at the end!
