What a great story. The Queen of Spades offers such a brilliant take on the nature of human greed. I loved the seemingly supernatural twist, but it can also be interpreted as the workings of Hermann’s own mind—a manifestation of his obsession. Pushkin clearly understands his characters deeply, and the story is built on a keen insight into human nature.
I especially loved how Hermann behaves exactly as you’d expect from an ego-fueled narcissist. Watching his breakdown and the unraveling of his image was beautiful and chilling at the same time- I loved the exploration of his descent into madness. Rightfully deserved- if only such justice were served to narcissist filled with greed and materialism.
