I loved this story around family, trauma, strength, healing and finding one's way. It was medicine and I will come back to it in my mind often.

3.5 out of 5 because it took me a lot of effort to let go the need to understand this book or have a grasp of the narrative. An important read nonetheless because it is not the sort of book I'd normally gravitate towards and it is good to expand my reading practices!

I want to rate this a 3.75/4 purely because I am not that sure if I understood it as well as I would like. I feel like it is one of those books you can understand more conceptually instead of *plainly*. It is a very poetic novel that is sad and striking and hopeful all at once. However, it isn't hopeful in the way that it makes you assume a happy ending, more in terms of understanding the meaning of family and letting go, etc, etc.

Vivid and haunting. This book left me thinking about it well after I had put it down in between readings and finishing it this morning.

I liked this one. Birdie. A lot! It was a thinker. The narrative was atypical. The timeline(s) were asymmetrical. The story poignant. I was ready to give the novel a 5, but found myself somewhat dissatisfied by the ending (and I can't necessarily point my finger on why). This Canadian novel tells an important story - a story that celebrates the strength of women even under the heaviest of circumstances. (As an aside, I now have a strong desire to find/watch episodes of The Beachcombers).

Considering the elliptical nature of Birdie’s perception of time, the non-linear storytelling makes sense AnD it made for a challenging read. It is a difficult story, but that deserves to be told.
