I wish I DNF’d this one at 30%, Nami was clearly the authors favorite despite being the most insufferable character in the book. None of Cordelia’s actions or desires made a lick of sense. Tons of threats were introduced at the climax, only one was addressed, and that just fixed everything apparently. “She loved him too much to stop him” does not work when the thing she needs to be stopping is him
KILLING HIMSELF
. I should not have been taken out so frequently by grammatical errors in an AUDIOBOOK. The social commentary was extremely shallow which was extremely frustrating because I could clearly see really strong potential in the characters and the setting, but the author instead decided to only focus on Nami and her two modes of dealing with systemic oppression 1) High School Musical ass speeches and group dances or 2) being extremely easy to coerce into committing unconscionable atrocities

A great illustration of the evils of capitalism, colonialism and exploitation of climate migration. This book gives a lot of food for thoughts.
The author's style is beautiful and her description of the semi-submerged city is vivid and luscious. The world building is simple but compelling.
I loved the characters of Mira and Cordelia, the relationship between Mira and Kai was absolutely beautiful.
What I didn’t like: one of the POV characters, Nami, is a rich brat who makes bad decisions upon bad decisions and never grows up, even after being taught hard lessons. At the end of the book, I wanted to slap her. The parts from her POV were pretty draggy.
I will read the next installment

Although the pacing in this book is slower, there is still a lot of action happening and every moment serves it's purpose! The worldbuilding in this book is so interesting and unique and introduced me to so many cool mythological creatures! I love all of the perspectives we got! Cordelia's was the most interesting to me, but Mira's was my favorite! Nami's difficult to read at times because of how impulsive she is but I still enjoyed seeing her pov! I'm really interested to see what the sequel will add and how it will wrap up the story!

Fathomfolk is off to a good start with an interesting world and brilliant characters. However, it falls short in some areas. Mira and Cordelia for example are nicely developed and we can find out more about their backgrounds and struggles layer by layer. Secondary characters like Eun or Gede got a nice introduction, but later on were underused with an unclear purpose to the story. Moreover, the pacing was off, with rushed events on the one hand side and a slower pace on the other hand side. Despite these flaws I’m curious how the author will develop the story. I hope to read more about Mira, Eun and Cordelia. All in all it was 3,5 stars ⭐️ for me!
