I only got 3% into the book, and I have already zoned out, had to reread an entire section because it was confusing, and got nauseated at the cishet romance nonsense that took up most of the first chapter after a super repetitious, heavy handed introductory scene. This feels very young YA to me, not adult. I’m not in the mood to force my way through something boring.

The sentences where everywhere, as was the introduction to the characters and the world.

i do not DNF books.
i love finishing a book and giving 1 or 2 stars. it feels like an accomplishment to be able to say "i persevered. i survived."
in my life i have DNF'd 2 books. even then it was because i simply forgot to ever pick them up again. this is the first book in my life i am willingly choosing to put down.
i got 32 pages in.

as my mum literally just said two minutes ago, "life is too short for bad drinks - bad wine, bad coffee. and bad books."
ladies and gentlemen, amen

Too much political, not enough fantasy

DNFed this. There's just too much and I was confused half the time. Plus asian culture isn't really one of my interests.

This was a deeply disappointing read. It begins with interesting world building, and it seems like it’s going to be very unique with an interesting political standpoint. The writing is captivating, as well. However, as the book progressed, I became more and more frustrated. The plot begins late in the book and rushes through; concepts
such as the sand gods being connected to the land itself
that are integral to the plot are introduced just pages before enacted. The characters are vapid, relationships feel weak and pointless
how is the main couple going to break up then get back together a few pages later?
, and plot twists are predictable
girl everyone has told you Firth is manipulating you
. There were a lot of action scenes that were extremely hard to follow. Also, there is a whole scene in here that is a complete rip off of totally underground unknown movie The Little Mermaid, surely no one will catch that!

Received this book as part of my first Illumicrate subscription and listen, it's a beautiful book with an amazing concept. However, I found myself often just pushing through at times. Some of the POVs of this book were definitely stronger than others, but I also found the romantic relationships in this book lacking. Not in the fact that they weren't there, it definitely wasn't the center of the book, but in the way that I couldn't understand why some of these characters were attracted to each other to begin with.
Also, because it's set in a fantasy world that I'm not familiar with - I did hope the author spent a bit of time explaining some of the creatures a bit more thoroughly. I didn't really always catch the difference between the fathomfolk themselves. The book is set up for a second book and I may read it, but overall it's not a very memorable book for me.
