Promising premise, terrible execution.

-The book starts with you knowing that Collins' mission to get Jasper to fall in love with her. For over a quarter of the book you have no reason why - which means I had absolutely no investment into the story.
-Collins is a very bland character; the only characters with any real personality are Sebastian and Anastasia.
She is also very naive which made these alleged conniving plans usually really stupid.

Puros problemas de blancos privilegiados y una trama tonta, pero me gustó el romance y tiene capítulos cortos.

In the simplest sense, this book just didn't offer much that hasn't been done before.

The writing style itself felt extremely flat and disconnected, making it difficult to care for the characters and how their circumstances turned out. The plot, as well, felt forced and honestly insignificant in a sense. The characters lacked any depth at all. Additionally, diversities included in the story felt surface level only and used just for the sake of including a diverse character cast.

Overall, this felt like a very forced and stilted story that you can find elsewhere.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

“Right now, with him next to me, it’s like before. He’s the part of the story that makes you want to stay up all night reading. The first full breath after a long sprint. The light at the end of the tunnel. The cozy cabin after a long road home.

Is he someone who comes back even after you let them go? Am I? These thoughts float away, dissolve, and disappear. I’m excited for everything I don’t know, for whatever happens next. I smile at Jasper, and he smiles at me.”

right person wrong time trope always serves even if it makes me want to throw my book against the wall

I love, LOVED the atmosphere and the characters. The mystery took a while to get into but I didn't mind cause I was so interested in the character dynamics. Honestly, the ending was a little messy but overall this was really good.

The basis of the book was solid but it left me wanting more. I’m not sure what, but it was lacking in some way. A good and easy quick read though, I enjoyed it.

Collins Pruitt is at Rutherford Institute for one reason only. To get close to and destroy the Mahoney brothers. She has her reasons, and she plans to go on with this mission of hers. What she doesn’t expect is to actually start falling for Jasper Mahoney along the way.

I found most of the story to be interesting, especially pertaining to why Collins was out to destroy the Mahoney family in the first place. I can’t say I didn’t see the reason coming, but there were other shocks along the way that did take me by surprise. I always love a boarding school setting; there’s just something about it that makes the story better, even if the story falls short. Unfortunately, the story did fall a little short for me. I still liked it, but it didn’t meet my expectations.

I can’t say I liked any of the characters, except for Sebastian. He was kind of fun and I loved how he kept calling Collins by her full name. I felt bad for him, actually, because he seemed to genuinely like Collins but she wouldn’t give him the time of day because of her “mission.” That said, Collins spent a lot of time talking about her “mission” more than anything, so I didn’t really feel the chemistry between her and Jasper at all. She was just yammering about how she had to get close to him and break his heart because that’s what she was at Rutherford for. It got too repetitive.

The monthly sections ended with a little flash forward to the end of the story, which I liked. It gave me some wonder as to what exactly was happening and who Collins was with in each flash-forward. It was the flashbacks that got a little hard for me to follow because it seemed like that was also half the story instead of where Collins was presently.

Overall, I did like the book, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked to.
