Good read. Fairly predictable. I can see how this would make a good TV show. Probably a better show than a book. Characters lacked some depth for me.

Almost 5 stars!! I wasn’t thrilled with the way things ended (hence, the 4 stars), but this was a book I just could not put down! Kept me on my toes and turning pages to figure out what was going on.

Great!

I finished this book in a matter of hours. Truly one of the best books I have read this month!

2.5 stars.
Interesting premise, but i was ultimately annoyed with Bailey and hated how she acted/how ungrateful she was.
I HATED the ending and how unsatisfying that is for the mc; what is really the point to have done all this for a spoiled brat?
The part where the 12 year old shows up with this note was just weird to me. Like what the fuck? Never elaborated on. Felt like a completely random plot detail.
I think there was a lot unresolved with the US marshal - all this hinting that they couldn’t trust him for what?
And we still don’t know what Owen actually did wrong in the whole situation. Why was his decision to out the grandpa truly so wrong according to the family? I understand that he was in danger with the organized crime members, but I just feel that a lot was not properly explored and it didn’t have me truly shocked or surprised. I kept waiting for this book to get better and that wow moment but it never came, and then the ending just sucked. I’m surprised this won the 2021 goodreads award. The more I think about this book, the more I realize how much I didn’t like it.

But it kept me reading! And I thought the writing style was good. The detective stuff was fun because it was like trying to solve a puzzle. I liked the reveal where it explained the backstory of the grandpa and his evolution. The characters just fell short for me and I did not feel that the ending resolved anything for me.
