Twisty, loopy, really confusing. An awesome brainfuck.

I really cannot say I always knew what was going on in this book, but I don't think that it really matters. Everything from the characters to the story is unconventional and original. Numerous times I exploded into laughter after being utterly surprised by some hilarious action.
Here are a a few of the things that happened in the first chapter, if this sounds good to you, buy this book:
-Son returns a truck full of socks that his father stole
-A homicidal cat is stopped from a murderous rage by vaseline on the bookshelf
-A blind dog holds our hero's balls hostage as he talks to an attractive old lady
-Trying to buy cat poison from a man that believes cats are holy animals
From there we have homicidal monks, kinky old women, tommy guns, the biggest crime spree in history, BEES, clockwork, crazy people, crazier people, brainwashing, shenanigans, and more of the one toothed blind dog!
I recommend this book to everyone.

Loved it. Totally madcap but really enjoyed it once I got into it, which i did after about 40 pages.
Reminded me a lot of Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. But also unique and inventive. Joe goes from law abiding well meaning wimp to amazing badass leader of London's criminal fraternity while solving mysteries and saving the world. Must see what else he has written.

This was loads of fun to read: mad capers, gangsters, secret spies, trains, clockwork doomsday machines, figuring out where you belong in life and what your destiny is ... A very entertaining adventure story (though with a teensy bit too much torture in it in one section) and a good page-turner. Feb 22 2013
I enjoyed reading this again. The train Lovelace sounds like loads of fun, and there are lots of elephants too. (Still a bit too much torture though.)

Torn between two family legacies, Londoner Joe Spork turned his back on the glamourous gangster life personified by his father Mathew and instead became a clockwork artificer like his grandfather Daniel. Old age pensioner Edie Banister is a retired spy who fought the Great Game for King and Country across Europe and Asia through the early part of the Twentieth Century, attempting to stop the Opium Khan Shem Shem Tsien. When a very strange, beautiful and exceedingly well-crafted artifact comes into his possession, a clockwork book beloved of a cult called the Ruskinites, Joe finds himself at the centre of a battle for the future of the planet, and must team up with the re-activated Edie and embrace his dormant gangster heritage to save the day.

I continue to love Nick Harkaway. This book was a delight. Easier to recommend than The Gone-Away World, since you can actually talk about what the book is about without ruining everything, which I appreciate.
