Not bad for a debut novel, don't you think?

For a while, I was confused by the happenings. It felt like it was just going around in circles and maybe that's why it took me ages to finish this book. It took me around a week or more but I finally got to the good parts, Reena comes up with an important realization, stands up for herself (the part I like the most), a new set of problems and she solves them. I was like "Hey, this is actually good." It didn't focus on just Reena and Sawyer, it also had other elements like family, friends and teenage problems such as pregnancy, drugs, you know the usual. I love a book that has something to give other than romance and How to Love gave me that.

I really recommend this if you're undergoing the same problems as Reena's, the ones I mentioned above. I think you'll be able to relate well and maybe this could even help you out.

I was really surprised when I started reading this book. I thought it was just another teen romance, another drum to add to the noise. Instead it was stark and hit close to home. It reminded me a lot of my younger relationships where I gave too much of myself or wanted more from others. I thought it was a very realistic representation of a young woman's approach to independent adulthood and what she needed in order to get there. However, I really hated Sawyer (which I assume the author was intending). I didn't understand their relationship or why they cared for each other. I especially didn't see any proof of change in the After sections of the book, more so considering how the book ended.

I was disappointed with the ending because I feel like the author chickened out or became confused with her convoluted subtext. What was she going for? The strength of independence? The need for vulnerability? Who knows? All in all, I think the book would have been stronger had she not made that stop (I'm trying really hard to avoid spoilers).

How to Love is one of my most anticipated books this year and it sure as hell was worth the wait.
My mind is a whirlwind of emotions right now leaving me unsure what to rate this but I'm giving it a five. Because.. This book got me feeling so pissed yet so giddy and so happy at the same time. I feel like I'm on a drug and I'm high. Smh.

Though there a lot of unanswered questions swirling in my mind, I was gripped. So whatever.

the characters are extremely unlikable and just get worse as the book progresses. the protagonist prides on being quirky and “not like other girls” and i couldn’t help but get annoyed and angry with her and the way she talked about and demeaned other women. her main love interest was not any better.

i don’t know, i just find it really hard to read a book in which the characters do every little thing to make it hard to root for them. (they were both cheaters and shitty friends, shocker!) if i was hannah i would’ve wished i was aborted.

I was expecting it to be a lot different.
It wasn't very emotional and I didn't fall in love with the characters. Maybe Hannah but all the rest were annoying.
Like all it had was a cute ending.
This book would make a good movie.

ummmmm this book was good? i think.... lol. the before and after flip flop seemed unnecessary and made it feel like nothing happened this entire book. as soon as it’d get somewhere in one timeline, it would switch and then once we got back to the timeline there’d be a time hop of sorts and i would have to get back into this new plot point. the “before’s” felt unnecessary after ally passed, i stopped caring about half of those filler chapters real quick and just wanted to get back to the main story at hand. the ending was cute tho so yeah.

Very enjoyable. Important.
I really liked how you read back and forth between before and after and it flowed really well because normally I get confused but this worked. I loved seeing it fall apart but come together so so well.

How to Love is a coming of age novel about Reena and Sawyer's complicated relationship.
I liked how there were lots of complications in their relationship which didn't make it a cliche love story.
However, there were times where Sawyer and Reena's personalities weren't very likable, and times where they treated each other unkindly.
The alternating chapters between Before and After motivated me to keep reading.
The subplots added more drama to the story and explored Reena's relationships with her family and friends.

Originally had this ranked at 2.5, but I just gave it a reread. Maybe I've grown up in the past two years since reading it, or maybe I understand grace a little more. But I get it now. It's great, plus written quite well.
