Not the love of my life, but I feel it will stay with me for a long time. As everything published by Tajfuny the cover is simply beautiful, the attention to the detail within the publication - astonishing. The book itself contains an introduction which explains the life of the author never before translated into Polish and the short story Gorączka złotych rybek, about a man who became obsessed with created a new breed of goldfish, that would resemble the (unhappy) love of his life. A bit too poetic to my taste and not very surprising, but still managed to engage me totally as a reader.

Two poignant stories exploring frustration, self-worth and trying to make your mark in the world. Set in Japan in the years between the two 20th century world wars, they show a nation caught between the old feudal way of life and the thrusting modernity brought in by the Meiji era. The men are largely frustrated and unsettled by their inability to grasp the opportunities modernity seems to offer them, while the women float serenely above them. An interesting pair of stories.
