The thread that ties the remains to the person being held for trial seems very thin to me, and each time it was questioned, I was annoyed that it was such an improbable premise connecting these two stories being investigated... that said, I liked the characters and setting and mystery enough to keep reading.

I haven't finished a book that fast in ages. If I had a chance yesterday, I would have read it all. And, those last ~50 pages I read so fast because I have a project to finish up.

This just might be my favorite Ian Rutledge mystery.

From what I remember of the last one, I didn't like it much. Basically the same as the other two in the series; mysterious woman who is seducing Ian, her refusing to give pieces of information to protect someone, Ian getting the right information at the last minute. In many ways, this was the same as the other three, mainly with the latter two. However, the mysterious seductress was missing. Hooray! That was my largest complaint for the series since I didn't want to read the same woman in each book with a different name.

I had a bit of a crack theory for the conclusion of this one.
I thought that Fiona was going to be Eleanor and then something with the dad and the body really was Fiona's. It would have really messed with Hamish since he should know who Fiona is and looks like, but, well, he's dead. He's not really there and everything he knows or says is from Rutledge and is just another part of his unconscious mind. But, alas. I was wrong and Hamish is here to stay.
Wasn't even close to what it really was since, as usual, the huge reveal was more at the end and it would have been a huge leap to get where Rutledge was, even if you followed the evidence. At least, that was my opinion of it.

Definitely one of the best I've read in the series so far, and it's changed my mind on it. I picked this one up more as a give it another chance sort of deal since it has so much promise to it. I'm really glad that I did since I would like to give another try to the rest of the series.

Possibly the best Rutledge book I've read yet. Fast paced and full of twists and intrigue. LOVED this.
