Great fun. More than the plot, it’s the tangential insights into the common absurdities of human nature that makes this such a hilarity. We laugh at ourselves. There is some unevenness in the plot with some chapters feeling rushed and inadequate while others too long drawn. But there are many great laughs guaranteed provided you let down your guard of realism.
This is what would result if Monty Python did to _Heart of Darkness_ what they did to King Arthur or the New Testament.

Certo non è per tutti questo tipo di comicità e chi si aspetta un umorismo più graffiante è destinato a rimanere deluso, perché è un'ironia bonaria quella di Jerome, ha un che di familiare e rassicurante.
Non c'è nulla di paradossale o di eccentrico, è la vicenda di tre giovanotti come tanti e del loro viaggio in barca sul Tamigi, tra disavventure quotidiane e deliziosi aneddoti; storie semplici e persone comuni, con cui tutti possiamo identificarci e che quindi riusciranno a farci ridere di noi stessi senza mai malizia o cinismo: ecco il motivo del successo intramontabile di questo romanzo.
Lo stile si adatta ai contenuti ed è sempre garbato e leggero, peccato per qualche divagazione di troppo sulle campagne ed i villaggi inglesi, a testimonianza del fatto che il libro fu concepito originariamente come guida turistica.

The best words I can find to describe this book is entertaining nonsense. It wasn't really a story as much as winding rant about nothing, but quite entertaining ones. The only problem is, it was all the same, and even for a quite short book it got old after a while. It probably would have worked great as a movie or something though.
As a "humor" book, it's a well-written and timeless one. you can still feel close to characters nearly 130 years after it's been published.
And if that's not enough for you, there's an Audiobook version read by Hugh Laurie. He's done an absolutely brilliant job portraying the characters and he deserves to be praised for it. I enjoyed every minute of listening to this audiobook and strongly recommend it to anyone have an interest in this genre.

It was funny at times but wandered off into the Victorian era about its kings and queens and British history, which wasn't really something I started this book for.
The image of Uncle Podger hanging a painting and Harris singing the comic song will forever be etched in my mind. Hilarious novel!

I read To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis a few years ago, and that book references Three Men in a Boat quite a lot. I picked them both up recently and thought I'd read them back to back. Three Men in a Boat is quite funny, but a little rambling. But that's kind of part of the narrator's thing. I was reading it on a plane and was flabbergasted when the man sitting next to me saw it and said, "That's a wonderful book!"
