The strangest part of this book was the rather curious tonal change from the general, very British sense of humour to travel writing to even more curious purple prose. But the book is genuinely funny, the kind where people feel compelled to ask you what you might be chuckling about, and the wild tonal shifts does not take that much.
Delightful. Enchanting. Deep, but in a shallow, lighthearted way. I loved this book and I don't know how I made it past 30 as an avowed lover of British literature without knowing that this book and Wodehouse's Jeeves books existed.
Okay first off, who even names their child after their last name?? That was just the beginning of my giggles from this book.
Three men (they are more like disorganised, silly, overly ambitious but also really lazy boys) who decided to take out a boat down the river Thames and just reminisce and have fun without another care in the world. But the thing is, despite their over-preparedness for this trip, everything that could possibly go wrong, does.
It was hilarious, plotless and just a perfect for some light reading. I brought this book with me when I went overseas and I brought it with me when I started uni again and although I admit, I had some really embarrassing moments when reading it because I couldn't keep my giggles in and I apologise to those sitting around me but no shame!
Not really sure what else to say about this book other than the characters are funny, the story is not linear (the narrator goes in and out of daydreams, memories, and stories) and progresses only slightly but is really leisurely overall. :)

So here's the problem with this book. It employs a vey subtle humor that needs to be paid close attention to or you will miss it, while simultaneously having filler between jokes that is not compelling enough to keep your attention so that you do catch the jokes.
Hilarious travelogue, written in the style only a brilliant Victorian writer like Jerome could pull off. Montmorency is also a fantastic name for a dog. I'll have to remember it.
Fantastically funny author in the same vein as Wodehouse. The story of three Woostery chums (accompanied by Montmorency) and their larks and mishaps on a trip down the river.

Anyone for boating the Thames? This delightful account of a week long boat trip inspires one to plan such an outing.
