It's quite a simple story and it's not particularly deep, but the descriptions are very vivid and precise. He paints the scene in just a couple of sentences. You can really imagine what it felt like to live in Kyrgyzstan during WW II. (I'd rate it 3.5 if GR allowed half-stars)

Hem konuşmaya ne gerek vardı? İnsan her şeyi anlatamaz, zaten kelimeler de her şeyi anlatmaya yetmez...

Aytmatov’a ilk şöhret kazandıran hikayeymiş Cemile; benim de ilk Aytmatov kitabım.

Boy sees people in love and realizes something about himself. It has that quintessential coming-of-age flavor, the before-after contrast that I like. The writing style is reflective and intimate.

it was the song of the steppes and the mountains, at times brightly soaring like the kyrgyz mountains, at times vastly rolling like the kazakh steppes. my lonely darling... i've loved you for a long time. i loved you and waited for you even before i knew you and you came, as if you knew i was waiting...

I read the novella translated by Fainna Glagoleva. Excellent translation, and the story as a whole is just such a delight.
