I wonder if this is where George RR Martin got the conceit for the in-world academic historian’s take on his own world. It’s okay, but Martin makes the form sing.

“Whoever read this, if any remain to read it, weep for us who have no more tears. Pray for us who are damned alive.”

if this entire ... what was this, 7 pages? if this entire 7 pages had instead been that 6 page excerpt discussed by the 'author', i would have found this far more compelling. as it was written, though, it still has its place and merit.

not necessarily a must-read.

I didn't realize this was a short story until today. Written as if a historian with access to ancient manuscripts is summarizing the events, it gives additional information on the time between when the bore in the dark one's prison was created, and when the seal was created by the 100 companions. It's only about 7 pages and I would recommend it for those who like the series. I wouldn't recommend reading it before reading the series as it will likely not make sense and isn't written in the same tone as the rest of the series.

Nice bit of background finally answering the question of why it was only male Aes Sedai involved in sealing the bore.

It's written as a short informative manuscript shedding light into events that occurred before the Dark One's imprisonment. I read it after fourth book and it provides some interesting information, although it still remains somewhat elusive about the entirety of events, which I guess is rather fitting as it's supposed to be a long lost document about an event that happened eons ago. I liked it well enough, as I wasn't bored at all reading a historic document.
