Am not in the mood. It is an interesting book but I want to read fantasy books for now.

Picked this one up for "Heel Nederland Leest" (the whole of the Netherlands reads, they give the book out for free and do all sorts of events and activities in the library based around it). It took a long time to get into, and even then I'm not sure I really got into it...
It's the story of a boy who loses the ability to use anything but his right arm, and his adventurous friend who convinces him to become an arm wrestling champion. It's a sort of stream of consciousness, like a book made up of anecdotes, and everything happens against the backdrop of a dreary boring town.
It was kind of funny and interesting at times but I felt like this book just had too much going on, and not enough linking it all together. It also got pretty dodgy, I get that it's told through the perspective of teenage boys but I don't think that's an excuse to write the female characters so badly and to suggest that victims are to blame for abuse. They study this book at school in the Netherlands, honestly can't believe that, not only for the sexism but also the very explicit sex scenes 😳
I did manage to read it within the month but only just, and only because I downloaded the audiobook to both read and listen at the same time.
This is the second book I've read for Heel Nederland Leest and yet again, I'm left thinking that if they want the whole of the Netherlands to read then maybe they should choose better books???? Looking forward to next year...
