This is a smutty romance novel, but it’s disguised as Historical Fiction, so you will find it in the Literature section of a bookstore. It’s very lurid. That being said, it was a quick, easy read and fun. Not a great book, but good for the beach or as escapist literature. It’s also part of a trilogy and I own them all…so I am sure that I will finish off the set.
A main character you are meant to connect with who has no reedming qualities to their personality and you have no respect for. Terrible read, I didn't enjoy picking it up each time.
I am a patient reader but this is quite something. The topics used wernt the issue, it was the fact I had so much more to go and have so many other books I'd like to read.

The writing is truly wonderful, but I just got sick of the story and its stupid characters.

Sometimes going back is a bad thing, the past is left in the past... I decided to re-read this series, because i loved them when i read them the first time, which I'm pretty sure was in high school. This was one of Phillipa Gregory's earlier series. I've read some of her other things more recently and enjoyed them. But not this. It started out all ooh i kind of remember this, what a good story...then i got shocked. The main character, Beatrice, is just evil. She has no redeeming qualities. Well, i guess, that she is spirited and passionate and smart. But that just helps the evilness. When i was in high school, i was used to mean people and all that...i was in high school. Now that i'm happy in life, this stuff kinda shocks me. I kept trying to read it, but as the main character got increasingly mean and just systematically destroyed everyone's lives, the less i wanted to read. i read other books, and was just reading a page or two before i got disgusted and put it down. then finally i thought why am i doing this, just for old times' sake? Move on merredith!! I got somewhere near the end and gave up. And i'm not going to re-read the rest of the trilogy either. So many good books out there, and many of them by this author, that i don't need to read this. And i feel like her writing isn't as good as when she writes about actual historical events, either. This seems just like some runaway thing, what more can i have these people do? Blah. I'm giving it a two for old times sake, but if this was my first read, maybe less.
A lot of people seem to find this book distasteful, but it's one of my favorites. It's so different from what you normally get with historical fiction. I've read it several times.

Trudged through it but not as wonderful as Gregory's other sagas.
I actually got about 2/3 through it, but couldn't finish it. At first the narrator's manipulations and plotting were shocking but darkly thrilling to watch unfold. By the last third of the book, it's just unpleasant to continue watching the horrors grow and her pathology deepen.
I love Phillipa Gregory, and I was excited to pick up this book at my local bookstore, however, I was so disappointed. This book was alright in the first half but as the book dragged on, I grew to hate Lacey so much I couldn't even stand the book anymore! I wouldn't waste my time on this book or any other book in this series. Gregory's best work will always be in Tudor England.
