I first read this as a young bookseller when it was published in 1987. I’m curious to see if I still find it disturbing. 7/9/22

Still disturbing. 7/10/22

It seemed to go on a few hundred extra pages to wrap it up so quickly in the end. I knew where this was going, and yet I read on. 7/13/22

I really enjoy Gregory's novels, yet this series goes a little deep into the incestuous aspect of a brother/sister relationship. A bit disturbing as far as content, although I do enjoy her writing style.

I was very disappointed with this book. It was a tried and true formula which made it boring. I will not be reading the other 2 books in the series.

DNF. I wanted to be intrigued by this book. I felt like it could've been a book of its time but if it went any slower time would be moving backwards

Ugh. I have liked all the Philippa Gregory books, but this was dreadful. VC Andrew's Flowers in the Attic meets Gone With The Wind in late 1700s England. Read it all the way through because I was camping and it was my only book, but it was a waste of my time.

3.5 Stars. It's like Flowers in the Attic meets Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Intriguing and debauched.

I sympathized with Beatrice and hated her as well, but this was a compelling read. I tried not to think too much about the incest.
