Domestic thriller. Why this is under romance is beyond me.
Graphic: Incest, Gaslighting
Well written garbage. I shudder anytime I come across incest so for me, that was the moment I chose to add this to my DNF list.
This book is terrible. It goes on and on and 8s just not good. I love Philippa Gregory, so this was a surprise and a disappointment.

I recognise the ire of other reviewers that Beatrice is completely vile yet I don't agree completely.
She is not an absolute sociopath but has antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) to a degree. This was fed by improper parenting to grow her all-consuming obsession with Wideacre. Then when her father was killed, she suffered some form of PTSD that put her on a self and other destructive path. Yes, she could have gone off that path and many points, but made conscious decisions not to. This, I felt, was because at some point she was firmly cemented in self-destruction.
I did not enjoy the incest and thought it was a bit much even for Gregory, but as others have commented, it's not very different from the Jaime/Cersei relationship.
Her intent on self-destruction was also not easy to read and I both sped up the reading and skipped many parts of it. I didn't think it needed reinforcing quite so much how hated she became towards the end.
Not sure I'll continue the rest of the series.

Why?? Did I read this whole book? The main character is awful!! It is impossible to feel any sympathy toward her. She just does one horrible thing after another, all for her desire to live and control the estate for the entirety of her life.
Also if you like the whole Jamie/Cersei romance.. this book is definitely for you....
It is gripping because of the scandals and secrets and the writing is beautifully captivating, so it’s got that going for it.
Though it was a very satisfying ending!

I hate Beatrice. I want to grab her by her bouncey auburn tresses and punch her in the face, take her by the shoulders and shake her into a concussion. I wish somebody would have murdered her in her sleep or somehow not let her get away with all of the crap she gets away with. She is cruel and stubborn and idiotic and frustrating beyond belief. Whenever I read this book I spend a lot of time wishing Beatrice would just stop being her and doing all those awful things, and for once just learn her lesson, but she never does.
And that is precisely why this is one of my favorite books ever. The characters come to life on these pages, and elicit strong reactions from me. Gregory has a beautiful way with language where everything she describes seems real. This book is lush and the writing very visual. The story is enchanting, infuriating, touching, and traumatizing. It's utterly magnificent. I've read my copy of this until the spine is soft; I come back and re-read it every few years, and I never grow tired of it.
I normally prefer historical fiction based on actual historical figures but in this case the story, the characters, everything about this book is too beautiful and involving to overlook. I love a book that takes hold of my emotions and affects me, and does more for me than just kill time. This book definitely meets that criteria.
(Plus, when I'm reading, you can never go wrong with just a touch of smut. ;-) )
