I don’t think I really am enjoying this. But here I am. Incest??
I really like Philippa Gregory's historical fiction novels. I read all of those first and then heard about these. Turns out, I like historical fiction a million times more than random drama fiction that reads like it came out of a 1980's soap opera. After 100 pages I looked online and read the synopsis of the book to see if it was worth reading. Put it down and on to the next book. I have too many books I really want to read to take up time reading a book where I can't stand the main character.
I cannot, will not finish this book. Nor read the other two I got in series. I kept trying to go on after patricide, incest, but it is horrible the way the "heroine" treats all around her.
I really liked the women of, boleyn inheritance, etc. and read entire series AND fully recommend the whole series.

It was a page turner for sure, but only because I wanted to see how the wretched Beatrice would die. Scarlett O Hara meets Cersei Lannister.

This is the literary equivalent of really bad trash reality TV. It's so ludicrously bad that you are compelled to keep reading/watching just to see what could possibly happen next. A lot of skim-reading through the tediously long repetitive descriptive bits. Truly hideous. Can't believe this was written by the same author as the very enjoyable Tudor historical fiction.
I started this novel with some hesitation, having read some less than flattering reviews about it. But deciding to reserve judgment I launched in. I hate to say it, but I did not really enjoy the book at all, although I recognise that there were some aspects of it that were well written and well researched. Beatrice is a thoroughly despicable character with no redeeming features whatsoever. She has an obsessive all -consuming avaricious need for the land on which she was born to belong to her. But her love for the land is never fully explained, other than in the context of her initial love for her father and her way of life which she then systematically destroys through her scheming. I have never wanted to finish a book more, just so I could put it down. The only reason I finished the book is because I wanted to see if Gregory was able to resolve the book in a satisfactory way after Beatrice virtually single handedly destroys everything good around her. For me, it was a deeply unsatisfying, trying read, and I am so pleased I never have to pick it up again.
